Legendary Cowboys, SMU quarterback Don Meredith dies
Source: Dallas Morning News

Don Meredith, the Dallas Cowboys and SMU quarterback and Monday Night Football icon, died Sunday evening in Santa Fe, N.M. He was 72.

Meredith died at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, a hospital spokesman confirmed this morning. The Meredith family's attorney, Lisa Fine Moses, said his wife, Susan, and daughter Mary were at his side.

Meredith had battled emphysema in recent years and suffered a minor stroke in 2004.

He was the only living Cowboys Ring of Honor member unable to attend the franchise's September 2009 inaugural game at Cowboys Stadium.

ABC's Monday Football changed part of America and never would

6. He was a great quarterback
Saw him in the 60s. Always beaten and bruised, but came back. A man of courage and strenght. Should have been a champion, but things didn't turn out quite that way.

Don, you gave our city hope again. Dallas, the Cowboys organization, and all Cowboy fans throughout the world will miss you. RIP.

9. Some Quotes
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2010/12/don-merediths-best-lines/1

"If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candy and nuts, wouldn't it be a merry Christmas?"

On teammate Walt Garrison: "If you needed four yards, you'd give the ball to Garrison and he'd get you four yards. If you needed 20 yards, you'd give the ball to Garrison and he'd get you four yards."

His comment when Vice President Spiro Agnew visited the Monday Night booth: "I didn't vote for you, but you do have a nice suit on."

On playing for Tom Landry: "He's such a perfectionist that if he were married to Dolly Parton he'd expect her to cook."

Goodbye, dear friend. I saw you play in the Cotton Bowl back during the day. I saw you beaten to a pulp. I saw you lead the rise of a new and exciting team. I saw you let down, bloodied, beaten, and retired before you should have. You deserved a ring or two. Who knows, it that sudden storm hadn't hit in Green Bay, you would have gotten it.

Don, you made it okay to be from Dallas again. You gave the city hope after what had happened in 1963. The nation still hated us, but we banded together and fought hard. During your reign, the Cowboys were always called "next year's champions." It was such a great relief and joy when Super Bowl VI finally handed Dallas its first world championship.

Many will miss you because of your work on Monday Night Football. I will miss you because of your heart and courage on the playing field. Goodbye, original Ring of Honor member. Cowboy fans around the world mourn your passing. RIP.

20. Namath was briefly on HBO's Hard Knocks
this past summer. The Jets were the team being followed this year on the show and Namath visited the Jets' training camp. Namath looked ok and slung a few balls to show Sanchez some of his moves. IIRC, he could still heave them pretty darn well.

22. He was terriffic on MNF
Seemed like a truly nice guy.

So sad to see him go at 72 - too young!

I enjoyed both Meredith and Gifford on MNF as a young football fan. Cosell - I could live with him or without him.

I did some reading up on those guys today. Gifford was a phenomenal athlete! All-Pro at three positions! He's 80 now and I hope he's doing well.

25. Raining,4th qtr, last 2min, hometeam being blown out, 98% of crowd has left, ...
Camera zooms in on a guy wearing a paper grocery bag over his head. Guy gives camera the finger.

Now, this is LIVE TV.

Crickets. Even Howard fails to find words.

Finally, Meredith said something like "The fan is just telling us that his team's number one."
