WikiLeaks boss Julian Assange could spend a year in Britain fighting extradition
Source: Daily Mail

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange could spend at least a year in Britain battling against extradition.
The 39-year-old Australian remains behind bars tonight after Swedish prosecutors demanded he be handed over for allegedly sexually assaulting two women.
His legal team, led by leading human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson and backed by celebrity supporters, will make another application for bail when he appears in court next Tuesday.
But the fight may last many months in the British courts and eventually end up before the European Court of Human Rights.

For the European Court of Human Rights to take the case Assange must first exhaust his remedies in the British legal system before the case can go to the Strasbourg court.

4. I'm glad he's got Geoffrey Robertson on board.
He has a formidable history with civil rights cases.

But according to The Age (Melbourne), discussions have already taken place between the U.S. and Sweden regarding handing him over to American custody. And that's exactly what this phony trial is all about.

"Senior legal sources in London said the 'big fear that if he is extradited they will send him to America and he will disappear'."

5. yet the Chilean murderer Pinochet lived in luxury and still didn't get
deported to Spain to face justice for his vile murderous crimes.

Something is wrong...murderers go scot free with the assistance of our governments whilst journalists and activists have the book thrown at them.

British justice..you are also on trial.

15. There are also really worrying precedents ...
e.g., the Nat West employees who were extradited from the UK to the US as requested.
e.g., the past "hackers" who were extradited from the UK to the US as requested.

(but note that very few - if any - have been extradited *from* the US *to* the UK)

It ALL depends on who has the biggest friends ...

And the point of the delay is to deny it.

14. I think this would be excellent. Don't think Assange a flight risk as his life is in danger.

If anything, he needs someone to pay for security. Reliable security.
