Poll: Obama's losing support; Romney would beat him now
Source: McClatchy Newspapers

President Barack Obama's approval ratings have sunk to the lowest level of his presidency, so low that he'd lose the White House to Republican Mitt Romney if the election were held today, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll.

... Overall, just 42 percent of registered voters approve of how he's doing his job, while 50 percent disapprove.

Obama's standing among Democrats dropped from a month ago, with his approval rating falling to 74 percent from 83 percent, and his disapproval rating almost doubling, from 11 percent to 21 percent.

Among liberals, his approval rating dropped from 78 percent to 69 percent and his disapproval rating jumped from 14 percent to 22 percent.

... The president's continued failure to rally independents could ruin his bid for re-election. A hypothetical 2012 matchup showed him getting the support of 44 percent of registered voters and Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, getting 46 percent.

134. It doesn't matter one bit how he does in any potential primaries; he'll be destroyed in the general.
Edited on Sat Dec-11-10 04:24 PM by Tesha
He is stunningly unpopular here in New Hampshire; he'll lose
by historic numbers. Our party just went from *MAJORITY
STATUS* in all branches of government to having less than
25% representation in any branch except the Governor's
chair, where a fake Democrat still resides. That's right:
hatred of Obama and the Democrats just installed absolutely
*VETO-PROOF* Republican majorities in both houses of
our state government.

There are far more anti-Obama bumper stickers than there
were *EVER* anti-Bush stickers.

A lot of DUers don't seem to have any concept of just
how bad it is out there in the real world for Obama. We
have two choices and they're both bad: run him in 2012
and *SURELY* lose or run another Democrat and most
likely lose; we have a few months to decide

151. "Yabuts" are out there and are going to be driving things. What's
a "yabut you say? It goes like this.

"He'll be destroyed in the general...." Yeah, but, (Yabut) that presumes he stays on this same course and doesn't adjust strategies. That presumption is invalid.

I'll go waaaayyyy out on a limb and say the only thing isn't the economy but "It's the 2nd term stupid",, pretty much no matter what it takes. If going on Oprah and having Sarah Palin do the dominatrix thing (complete with leather & whip) would guarantee a 2nd term, his people would be booking the slot even as we write & read this. There is nobody (or no principle) who gets a pass from being thrown under the bus if it furthers the 2nd term chances.

41. First of all...
Other polls have him with higher approval ratings...can't get to excited over one poll...also, I remember after Reagans mid term election he was at 40% approval and the polls had John Glenn easily beating Reagan in a two way race... We all know what happened in 1984. So don't get too excited about a repun win in 2012.

112. Democrats were absolutely furious with him -- with good reason --
for the way he handled the Monica Lewinsky thing. His first couple years also were viewed as not very productive, and he lost a lot of support in Congress. None of that mattered, however, by the time the next campaign came along -- he was reelected easily.

There was no excuse for it and it will forever be a blemish on his legacy. However, he has a thorough understanding of US and international economics and political strategies.

Comparing him to Obama is like comparing Mike Tyson to Pee Wee Herman.

In case you haven't noticed, politicians have shied away from that issue heretofore.

...but all the hope-and-changers who are now abandoning Obama would have a right wing induced misogynist hissy fit. (as per 2008).

Look - Obama is still better than any GOP and that will be true in 2012. Even if Mike Bloomberg cakewalks.

It's just that he isn't what we really need.
And if all those who voted for him in 2008 had turned out last November we would be in much better shape. But - as predicted - the hope-and-changers faded with the breeze.

He passed his wonderfully-Republican program for trade,
banking deregulation, telecommunication deregulation,

Well done, Clinton!

Yes, I definitely want to see a repeat of the tail end of the

Indeed.

And Whoa! Look at this. Tucked away at the bottom of the article:

The poll found that voters are inclined to blame congressional Democrats and Republicans more than the president if the deal to extend tax reductions falls apart and taxes go up on Jan. 1.

Wonder why that finding from the SAME POLL isn't being tossed around here.

Is that what you guys are saying? That Democrats blow big poll leads? Because if that's what you are saying I agree with you, because it appears that Obama is blowing the biggest lead of good will in 40 years.

Obama needs to support the people who will fight for him to the death, i.e; solid rank and file Democratic Party members. He doesn't seem to be doing that by cutting back room deals with Rethuglicans.

If he continues on this path, he will get his ass kicked so hard, it'll make Mondale look like FDR.

61. Oh, look! Here's the ever so liberal Freedom Works calling for a holiday for employess in 2002:
Date Published: December 29, 2002

Publication: Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

WASHINGTON - A lot of politicians are starting to worry about the little guy when it comes to cutting taxes.
A fresh round of tax cuts to stimulate the economy is expected to be one of the first tasks when the 108th Congress convenes in January.
A growing number of voices on both the right and the left are insisting that the package include a reduction in payroll taxes, such as those taken out of every paycheck to finance Social Security and Medicare.
Most American workers pay more in payroll taxes than they do in income taxes.
And that's especially true for low-income workers.
In fact, about 30 percent of the work force pays payroll taxes but ends up owing no income taxes, Congress' Joint Committee on Taxation reported. Because they pay little or no income tax, these same workers were left out of the $ 1.3 trillion tax cut package passed last year.
That's why advocates contend a payroll-tax reduction would be the most effective measure Congress could pass to stimulate the economy: The middle- and lower-income workers who would benefit the most would be the most likely to put their money back into the economy through spending.

http://www.freedomworks.org/news/support-for-cutting-payroll-tax-broadens-0

Unless we have really gone through the looking glass, I don't think Freedom Works could be called liberal. And no matter how much they act like this is 'concern' for the working poor, the objective is to undermine SS and move towards benefit cuts and privatization.

I don't think the "independents" wanted a sharp departure from GWB so much as they distrusted McCain after his catastrophic choice of Palin as his running mate. His fumbling response to Lehman brothers contrasted with Obama's smooth assurance, solidified the misgivings. My take on self-described independents is that the majority of them default to the Republican Party but avoid the label because they don't want to defend the Palins, O'Donnells, Bachmans, DeMints, Vitters, etc.

... of the story that places the "progressive" President - that many of us faithfully and earnestly supported beginning some two years before his inauguration - as nothing more than one of the sideline cast on the podium the last night of the Democratic convention on September 6, 2012.

Move out of the way, President - just as you did today when you walked from the White House podium leaving President Clinton to try and explain away the mess you have created. Created by virtue of your feckless and impotent politics and governance - where, if you even ever begin to engage on the battlefield, you enter with a "compromise" battle strategy - bending over and grabbing your heels with only the modest hope that the vile and evil GOP wingnuts will at least hand you some Vaseline.

I especially agree with your statement about Obama coming across as a wimp. Even when people don't fully agree with a President on a position they like to see a strong leader. It's always seemed like a test that Americans have for their leaders. If they can't stand up for anything, if won't fight for what they think is right (what he campaigned on and was elected on) then how are they going to stand up for me? Wimpiness just isn't American. So the base feels betrayed and lied to, the moderate middle doesn't see anyone with any kind of strong beliefs and the right feels free to walk all over him.
The realization that this isn't who we elected is dawning on a lot of people now so these numbers could be difficult to improve.

Maybe he is just tired of the far left always thinking they are right about everything and not even considering they just might be wrong once in a while. And then, not hearing him out and even considering his side of things. A president has to represent all the people-at least a good one should- not just his base. Pres. Obama has weighed all matters of importance carefully before making decisions. I think this recent decision on the taxes is just another example of this.

He belongs to a cult in their eyes and by their religious teachings. That doesn't mean they would vote for Obama, they just wouldn't vote for Romney.

The Republicans need all the votes from their own base that they can get exactly the same way as the Democrats need their base. Republicans seem to have a better understanding of that though.

Evangelicals might vote for him in the general election as part of the anybody-but-Obama crowd. But, teabaggers wouldn't let him get that far in the primaries. St. Sarah is their Annointed One. Everyone else running is going to have to lean as far right as they can and claim that they believe the earth is 6,000 years old and that the moon landing was faked. I honestly think that if Palin runs in the primaries and loses, that the teabaggers will be so outraged, they'll urge her to run a third party ticket. And, of course, she's got such a huge ego, she'll go for it. But, the Rethug primaries are going to be a circus in '12. Hopefully, they'll terrify people so much that Obama will be a shoe-in.

32. Nonsense...
Absolutely nothing has changed with Obama's approval rating in many months. Both Ras and Gallup have him at right around 45% and he has held that rating for what seems like a year now. While the President's approval ratings fluctuate some in the daily tracking polls, he always tends to settle at 45% or slightly above.

Considering how bad the economy is, Obama's approval ratings are really quite good.

They have this fantasy thought process that if only Obama fought harder the repubs would somehow say no fillubuster and let's do a tax increase for the wealthy....what utter bullshit...,Obama has to givern and his main priority is the middle class and lower tax bracket and he knows that on January 1 their taxes will go up and the repubs will have more power.... He made the right move....liberals refuse to understand this.

70. I agree - I honestly don't see a good alternative...
I'm glad Bernie Sanders is doing what he's doing but on a practical level I'm afraid it will accomplish little other than symbolically. The fact is that the middle class tax cut alone did not pass the senate in either version when it was tried. To blame Obama for this is ridiculous. What people aren't addressing is that there are benefits for the middle class in here - tax cuts and credits, benefits for small businesses and for alternative energy businesses. Frankly, I think for a lot of people in tough times they are feeling over-taxed and a rise in taxes would be hard on top of the fact that a lot of us don't get raises any more. Think of how many taxes people pay - Federal tax, FICA, State tax, local tax, sales tax, property tax, school tax. This fighting it is leading to no attention to Start, DODT, Dream Act. A compromise is not a loss - it's accepting that not everyone thinks the way you do so you get what you can and come back to try for more another day. Why are people on here so intent on destroying the Obama presidency?

Edited on Sat Dec-11-10 10:42 AM by danbee46
The agreement between Obama and the Repugs has so many bad things about it that I cannot support it.
1. The deficit will increase by almost a trillion dollars,
2. Individuals earning less than $20,000 and couples earning less than $40,000 will actually see their taxes increase,
3. Some Repugs have already said that the so-called "tax holiday" will be cause a problem when it's due to be reinstated,
4. The above problem probably will lead for increase calls by the GOP for benefit and eligibility cuts for ss and medicare,
4. Changing the way social security is funded, even for a year, sets a dangerous precedent,
5. and on and on and on

65. Bloomberg would never run as Romney's VP
He even left the Republican Party altogether.

If he hadn't run for Mayor of NYC under the Republican banner, the radical right would be
dissing him as badly as they are George Soros--an evil, non-conservative billionaire. For
that matter, I think Bloomberg is the nightmare of both RNC boss (de facto) Rupert Murdoch
AND Barack Obama. I don't think he will really run for President, but if he does, he could
be the first third party candidate with a serious chance since the 19th century.

As for Murdoch, as an Australian-born, nearly 80 year old with a young trophy wife, he knows
he is ineligible for the presidency of the USA on about 6 levels, but he's running nonetheless
by proxy. Without his blessing, no one gets the Republican nomination in 2012.

How pathetic is that?

Poll: Obama's losing support; Romney would beat him now
By Steven Thomma | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's approval ratings have sunk to the lowest level of his presidency, so low that he'd lose the White House to Republican Mitt Romney if the election were held today, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll.

The biggest reason for Obama's fall: a sharp drop in approval among Democrats and liberals, apparently unhappy with his moves toward the center since he led the party to landslide losses in November's midterm elections. At the same time, he's gained nothing among independents.

"He's having the worst of both worlds right now," said Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion at Marist College in New York, which conducted the national survey.

"As he moves to the center, he's not picking up support among independents and he's having some fall-off among his base. If his strategy is to gain independents and keep the Democrats in tow, it isn't working so far."

87. I've read comparisons between Obama & Clinton, who seemed to benefit from
disappointing his base by moving toward center. Times are very different since Clinton was in office, however. There wasn't a $13.8 trillion deficit to which Clinton wanted to add hundreds of billions of dollars by giving the super-rich tax giveaways. Also, the nation had not yet been traumatized for 10 years by a "my way or the highway" mentality by the opposition.

True, Clinton had been wrongfully, unmercifully persecuted by the thugs his entire presidency, but that worked hugely in his favor when it came to opinion polls.

If people thought things were bad before, they're about to become really, really bad.

What would lead to a huge bounce for him? Coming out and saying "no tax cuts for the wealthy. Period. And I'll go HAM on anyone who obstructs that".

But he's not going to do that because he wants to be accepted by the thugs.

I certainly do not want Romney's empty headed, idiotic ass anywhere near the white house.

I fully intend to work just as hard as I did in 2008 to get President Obama reelected.

99. Well, you know--he has to earn it
Unless you want to adopt the rightwing team first mentality even if things are collasping around us.

Plenty of people out there are willing to do that--things they'd scream at Republicans for--but cheer Obama for.

No thanks.

121. At this point, not supporting a Democratic President is
aiding and abetting the right and their media machine.

Just keep it up and you will have President Palin in 2012.

124. What would Teddy say?
"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly as necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but it is morally treasonable to the American public."
- Theodore Roosevelt

You'll get a voucher 10 years from now, that would not buy private coverage for someone 65 or over today

There will be no hiding from that proposal. It's on paper

108. As Mr. pResident William J. Clinton's advisor said...
"It's the Economy, Stupid!"

Obama totally fucked up by hiring the banksters to shovel money into their bankster friend's pockets while ignoring most actual USAmerican human beings' needs...

With this last abomination, the Byden/McConnel backroom giveaway to the rich along with Obama's wars, he's proven that he's entirely tone-deaf when it comes to actual human needs and a total sellout to the affluent capitalists and the military industrial complex.

One-Term material indeed...

Enjoy pResident Romney and PLEASE don't blame the "whiny left" for his ascension, OK? :puke:

Two years is a LONG time in politics.
Give me a break. Romney, one of the oiliest, and most unpleasant politicians out there, is NOT going to beat Obama.
Obama has more political savvy than he's currently being given credit for.

It's silly and unproductive.
