Elizabeth Edwards Eulogized as Defender of Her Family
Source: NY Times

Excerpt:

“She would do anything in the world to protect all of us, no matter what the personal cost was to her,” said her daughter Catharine Edwards, 28, who, along with two longtime family friends, offered eulogies for Mrs. Edwards.

Then she read a letter that her mother had been writing for many years to help prepare her children for life after her death.

“You are complete joy to me,” Mrs. Edwards wrote. “I hope you will always know that. Wherever I am, wherever you are, I have my arms wrapped around you.”

The church held hundreds of friends, former campaign staffers and politicians who arrived to pay respects to a certain breed of political spouse whose high-profile life became an inspiration for people who, like she, had faced the death of a child, cancer and marital infidelity.

1. She was. In the face of death, she fought the good fight. The noble battle.
When it ended, and death had seemingly won, she spat in the faces of the 'moral aggrandizers'

She wins, they lose

Elizabeth was one of the good ones

They're rare

2. Amen
And it looks like it was a beautiful service and a fitting tribute to an inspiring woman.

3. LET IT BE KNOWN - - John was invited
He is a dick, she forgave him, DESPITE him being a dick

It saddens me to think there is no heaven in store for this caliber of Homo Sapien! She is the Christian you fundies only wish you could be. As far as I am concerned, she's closer to the real ideal of Jesus Christ than any of the saints, past and present....

4. Hopefully he was able to bring some measure of comfort to their children
There are some news photos of him holding hands with the children as they left the service.

Heartbreaking pictures.

5. He was
He may be a skank, but he's all they have left at this point

And I think, despite any shenanigans in the past, he will be the right dad for them from here

7. What is your source for that quote?
Hard to believe that she could have actually said that, in spite of her past behavior.

9. It was reported by witnesses that he promised a "rooftop wedding with Dave Matthews"
Most likely true, due to multiple sources. John's a skank, but he's redeemable.

10. I read that too
Elizabeth was a far, far better person than I am. Although I was an Edwards supporter, I kept hoping that a small part of the sanctuary ceiling would land on his head during the service. God, what he put her through.

17. He would have put us through a lot, too
had he secured the nomination, and his lying come out during the campaign. I wish Elizabeth Edwards would have tried to protect us from that.

In any case, I feel for her children, and did cry when seeing the grief of her oldest daughter.

13. Redeemable perhaps in a theological sense. Politically, he's as
redeemable as Dan Quayle. His name will be just another dirty joke forever.

12. I'm tempted to write in to the local paper--Raleigh News & Observer--
that Paul Newman was quoted as saying "why go out for hamburger when you can have steak at home"
referring to his long time marriage to Joanne Woodward. Too bad John liked hamburger better than steak.

18. And he wanted us to trust him with the Presidency
I wouldn't have trusted her to park a car next to mine.

But he has to marry her, then she cannot be compelled to testify against him in upcoming proceedings involving the misuse of campaign funds.

20. Amen!
And again I say Amen! No Christian I've encountered lately can hold a candle to her.

Thank you, Elizabeth. The world is a better place for you having been among us.

16. Indeed...
when a parent dies, the survivors tend to regret the things they did in the past. This statement will help a lot of that go away.

23. She used her time wisely & spent it telling her children what they needed to hear
Edited on Sun Dec-12-10 08:52 AM by SoCalDem
Luckily the little ones are now old enough to have a clear impression of who she was, and they are old enough to not forget.
