Sweden's far-right seizes on terrorist attack; Anti-immigrant parties use Stockholm bombing for

political gain.

The botched terrorist bombing in central Stockholm last weekend is being seized upon by Sweden's extreme right as an example of the dangers that multiculturalism and open immigration can have on the country.

The National Democrats, a small, far-right party with a handful of seats on local government councils, have planned a rally on Sunday in Stockholm against multiculturalism and terrorism. The party said it had warned of terrorists coming to Sweden in the past, only to have the warnings fall on deaf ears.

Omar Mustafa, president of the Islamic League in Sweden, said he fears the Saturday evening attack could undo the years of progress made by Muslims living in Sweden. “We will lose the most after this attack,” he said. “This will not help the level of Islamophobia.”

A larger and more-established political party entered the fray when William Petzall, a parliamentarian for the populist, anti-immigration Sweden Democrats party, wrote on his Twitter account, “I hate to say it but what did we tell you?”

in Sweden? They are just doing what Right Wingers do exploiting a terrible incident to go after minorities, other religions, etc.? The Swedish People are not so much in agreement with this Right Winger way of thinking?

3. They should look inward
IKEA may have been to blame.

Stockholm bomber had spent full afternoon at Ikea, police reveal.

An unhappy experience at the avant garde furniture retailer Ikea may have prompted Taymour Abdel Wahab to turn his ire against the Swedish nation, it has emerged.

Police searching an address in Bedfordshire removed no fewer than eight items of designer Swedish tat from the house including CD racks, light fittings and a voucher offering a reasonably priced breakfast of meatballs in tomato sauce.

Detectives also discovered a further series of objects in a back bedroom which were still partly in their boxes, with instruction leaflets strewn across the floor, and believe it is these which may have pushed Wahab over the edge.

Neighbour, Alan Jardine, last night recalled how he had encountered a visibly–distressed Wahab on a recent shopping expedition to the Scandinavian furniture giant.

4. EVERY incident like this plays into the far right's hands, no matter where
Just look at 9/1/2001. Osama bin Laden was the single most significant contributor to the Bush/Cheney 2004
presidential election campaign. Without him, Cheneybush would have been an unfortunate one-term footnote,
instead of an unfortunate two term catastrophe (Roberts and Alito didn't get placed until the second term,
e.g.--they are Osama bin Laden's appointees as much as they were Bush's).

for social cover. ETA: I've been mulling over the passing of Holbrooke and how somehow people think his last words could possibly be about peace when he spent nearly his whole career promoting militarism. I think it's because he wasn't far right but another flavor and he flew right under the radar of many people who are opposed to militarism. We expect wackjobs on the right to do that. We don't expect the Holbrookes to be right there with them.

9. Maybe these fools need to read a little bit about something called domestic terrorism.
In the States, we've got: Timothy McVeigh, Eric Rudolph, Joe Stack, Ted Kaczynski, abortion clinic bombers, radical anti-government cop killers, etc. Really? It's pretty low to exploit terrorist attacks to advance a misguided uber-nationalist message.
