(Dec. 16) -- A NATO airstrike mistakenly killed four Afghan soldiers, and a roadside bomb killed 14 Afghan civilians in a minibus on their way to a wedding in the country's west, Afghan officials said today.
Word of the deaths comes just hours before the Obama administration announced findings of his review of U.S. policy in Afghanistan, where U.S. troops have been mired in a nine-year-old war. An early summary document excerpted by The Washington Post cites "progress" against al-Qaida in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but acknowledges that "the challenge remains to make our gains durable and sustainable."
The policy review comes at a time when a record 60 percent of Americans say the Afghan war is not worth fighting. That number is up seven percentage points since July, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll released today.
The Afghan soldiers were killed when a coalition aircraft fired on them as they left their military base in southern Helmand province late Wednesday, a spokesman for the Afghan defense ministry told The Wall Street Journal.
