NOW goes after Hooters for catering to kids
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

(12-16) 17:51 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- The National Organization for Women filed complaints against local Hooters restaurants Thursday, but not for exploiting its scantily clad waitresses by subjecting them to leering and groping customers.

The subject this time was Hooters' catering to children.

The restaurants in San Francisco, San Bruno, Sacramento and Orange County are classified as "adult entertainment" establishments but also serve minors, NOW's California chapter said in papers filed with police and prosecutors.

What's more, the organization said, Hooters provides child menus, high chairs and booster seats, and sells T-shirts in children's sizes that identify the wearer as a "Future Hooters Girl."

Next you have Tilted Kilt - the Irish bar version of Hooters. I noticed the new one near me was always crowded...
Once I visited and got a look at what the waitresses were wearing, which wasn't much, I knew why.

31. This is biology
There's not that 'society' can do about it. Men like breasts for evolutionary reasons, same reason they like hips and nice hair -- all signal fecundity and health, which, from a reproductive standpoint, are desirable traits in a mate. That is how it was, is, and will be for many thousands of years.

Nanny staters running amok, I see. :eyes: Did it ever occur to NOW that the reason Hooters has child menus, high chairs, & booster seats is because parents kept bringing their kids?

Guess you don't get your name in the paper if you actually help women get something they *NEED* like child support, assistance with a VAWA application, job training, loans, grants & scholarships for schools, etc.

10. I refuse to patronize Hooters
Not because it's an "adult" establishment (it's not by any stretch), but because the greasy food is atrocious and the beer overpriced. If kids are banned from Hooters, they should also be kept away from the beach on a warm summer day, where a LOT more skin and cleavage will be in clear view of young impressionable eyes.

Agreed & Well Said
We had a little dust up here locally about a Hooters coming into our fair little city of 50K a suburb of St. Louis a few years back. They had blocked a Hooters at one location in a strip mall in the past, got sued, lost and the issue went away for a bit. Then about 5 years ago Hooters returned to take over an empty restaurant location this time very near a school. The thought police were up in arms with LTTE's, protests at the City Council Meetings and alike. The Hooters was approved, it went in and has contributed to the tax base very nicely ever since.

The do have lousy overpriced food, but if you (and I) don't like them we sure don't have to go there.

29. They market their restaurants as family restaurants.
I saw a Hooters on the way home from my parents house one day. We didn't have enough time to cook and get the kids to bed in time for school the next morning. The kids were 6 and 7 years old. So, we pulled in. I wasn't sure about the place but my husband said: "Look, the sign says it's a family restaurant." So, I thought well, if they are pushing it as a family restaurant, maybe it wasn't that bad.

So, we walk in and are immediately accosted by half clad females. My 8 year old son has a huge smile on his face and as the waitress is leading us to our tables, my husband has a grin equal to my son's. I pause, look around the joint and see leering old men, almost naked women and my daughter's confused face.

I turn around and tell my husband we are leaving and we all left that little strip club to go eat at Shoney's.

I'm not sure whose family they modeled that restaurant after, maybe it was the Manson family.

70. No, I don't go to strip clubs.
But it appears you frequent them. Thus the mild form of nudity and sexuality at HOOTERS does not bother you because you have become desensitized to the sexual exploitation of women.

And you seem to have a problem with Muslim women too.

93. I like to hang out with other empowered women and men, not those stuck in puritanical attitudes.
I have become desensitized to prudishness, and treating women, and men, as objects that are to be covered, or coveted, based on something as shallow as "how much skin they are exposing". I no longer buy in to the patriarchical attitude that women are victims if they are sexual beings.

Oh, and I have no problem with Islam, and perhaps you could benefit from researching, and explaining to me (and yourself), what a burqa has to do with Islam.

72. No, I'm not kidding.
The woman wore no bras and had their T-shirts tied up under their hooters - Thus the name - and there were no tights in site. I think different Hooters are more naked then others.

I know some woman must have pretty breast. And sometimes in movies they look very pretty. But I prefer not to look at every contour of someone else's mammary glands as I eat my meals with my family. That is why I left. I have a right to leave an establishment I find offensive.

I never said others should leave. I merely explained my little outing. Yet, 3 people here found my dislike of Hooters, and their sexual exploitation of women, offensive. Because I didn't care for the experience, I should be insulted and rudely called names? DU seems to be getting more and more intolerant of any differing opinions every day.

Ok, I think we need to agree here that NOT ALL HOOTERS ARE EQUALLY NAKED

Different county and city decency codes allow for different levels of undress. Thus most of the disagreements here are based on different standards of undress allowed in individual communities.

I think NOW's argument that all HOOTERS are exploitive may not hold up.

65. At my local pub, much of the staff gets totally nude and dances suggestively.
Under Oregon laws, full nudity and hard alcohol are allowed in a club, as long as food is served... so folks are more than happy to relieve suckers of their money for a bit of wiggling. The women dancing basically run the club, set the rules, and can get every regular in the club (which are many) to bounce somebody in a heartbeat.

No minors allowed though, because there's hard alcohol.

Note the way that I put that: In Portland, Oregon, riding a bicycle down the street, totally naked, is totally legal, protected under freedom of speech laws.... but we want to avoid exposing minors to those imbibing in alcohol.

104. No, not really.
I have been to Hooters probably about three times in the last decade plus. Once because I was hungry and not much else was open. Again when I was actually working and on the clock and the client contact wanted to go out to lunch. I actually wound up driving him back to his office because he had "one too many" (no lie). And the third was at the behest of some of my buddies.

First-The food isn't even that great and is overpriced.
Second-The service isn't that great
Third-If you want to watch guys get buzzed/blitzed on overpriced beer and fritter their money away, then Hooters is for you.

It isn't that risque. Admittedly, the waitresses are dressed in white tank tops, and orange shorts with are cut a little high at the thigh. But it is totally tame compared to the few bona-fide strip bars I have been dragged to.

Does is exploit the women? Yes. You could say that and not be wrong. The whole idea is to get attractive college age girls as your waitstaff and have them be flirtatious. On the other side of the coin, plenty of guys flock to the place and empty out there wallets for marginal food, overpriced beer, loud and unpleasant atmosphere. It becomes a question of who is exploiting who.

Taking on Hooters for providing child menus, booster seats and T-shirts is a ridiculous waste of time. I'm thinking perhaps NOW needs a change in leadership. Put some people in charge that will do meaningful things instead of stupid crap like this.

Children can see more flesh watching TV or going to the beach than they'd see at Hooters.

It's a little over the top to call it adult entertainment, but the tone is pretty clear. It's probably not the best place to take impressionable kids, and my daughters wouldn't be getting a Future Hooters Girl shirt.

It's not the most serious threat facing women, but it's not a positive portrayal of them, either.

Did anyone see the Hooters Undercover Boss episode? I did and they actually do not condone any kind of demeaning antics towards the waitresses. One manger was asked to move on after refusing to change his attitude towards his staff.

For the record I am a woman and a feminist at that.

how can you tell me what I am. I have fought stereo types for years as I have gotten a footing on what I actually do believe. I stand by with what I say. As I hear of more and more women being murdered due to domestic violence and rape, I just think their are other fights that we need to fight. If you actually knew me you wouldn't say that I was a male identified woman. If we jumped onto every little thing the big things don't get taken care of.

Take a breath and think. I have.

I just didn't have the time or energy to explain how abuse, rape, etc are all part of the disrespect towards women that stems from very basic sexist attutides, perpetrated ad nauseum by (in part) establishments such as hooters by sexist men, and male identified bimbos who who work for them. (On edit -and, I might add, those who support and/or frequent such establishments)

I can tell your heart is in the right place, but I disagree that this issue is of little importance.

107. I think it is very cliche to say that Hooters is direspectful and as such spreads the disrespect
towards women. It's like the other excuse of well if she hadn't worn that, got drunk, ad nauseum for getting raped. Another example is around knitting/crocheting. Feminists refused to take part in this believing it was demeaning to knit or crochet. we lost a generation to the needle arts because of this thinking. Thanks in large Part to Debbie Stoller, editor of Bust and has 5 books on knitting and crocheting and her own line of yarns, she has broken down that barrier.

What we need to do as a society is to teach one another to respect each other. Whether we work at hooters, in the sex trade industry or are a stay at home parent. The lack of respect towards women is taught at a very young age. Saying that Hooters perpetrates it or Playboy or anything else treats a man with disdain. Aren't we then saying that men cannot think?

51. read the whole article, people
wonder how many of you complaining about this "protect the children" measure are all in favor of the "No more toys in Happy Meals" protect the children measure?

Patricia Bellasalma, NOW's California president, asserted that Hooters is violating state and local laws prohibiting sexually oriented "adult" businesses from serving minors. The chain is also violating federal employment standards, she said.

Bellasalma said the federal government has not subjected Hooters to the rules requiring employers to protect their workers from harassment by customers. The Atlanta restaurant chain has successfully argued that its employees know they will be working in sexually charged surroundings, Bellasalma said.

But in recent years, she said, the company has promoted itself as more family-friendly. She cited a statement on hooters.com that "10 percent of the parties we serve have children in them."

"If they want to switch and turn the chain into a family-style restaurant, more power to them," but Hooters would then have to follow the same anti-harassment rules as other restaurants, Bellasalma said.

59. Kinda but not really. "...marketing sexual entertainment to minors..."
and avoiding EEOC regulations.

In the late 90's, Hooters, Inc. told the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that their main function is not providing food, rather their executives characterized Hooter's Restaurants as primarily a provider of, "vicarious sexual entertainment." They have used this designation as a way to avoid compliance with regulations against sexual discrimination in the workplace, yet Hooters also advertises themselves as a family restaurant, and fails to comply with regulations for providers of sexual entertainment.

<snip>

"Marketing to young children and advertising as a family restaurant while in reality being nothing but a provider of “vicarious sexual entertainment” amounts to sexual exploitation and attempts to legitimize sex discrimination and hostile work environments for women," says Patty Bellasalma, president of the California chapter of NOW. "Every local county or city with a Hooters should consider a ban on marketing sexual entertainment to minors, and require that sexual entertainment businesses check IDs at the door."

Local and state authorities should demand that Hooters, Inc. either comply with EEOC prohibitions against sexual discrimination, if they wish to be a family restaurant that serves children, or comply with regulations covering providers of sexual entertainment, which prohibit children from the premises. It's time to end this legal bait and switch. link

We can assume by where NOW chooses to focus its attention that booster seats at Hooters are also as important as or more important than:

equal pay for equal work,
equal access to education,
equal access to well-paying jobs,
maternity and family leave,
affordable daycare,
poverty in single-parent families
teen motherhood,
defense of women and girls in our Afghanistan policies,
national and global sex trafficking of women and children,
access to family planning and birth control
abortion rights
prevention and response to domestic violence,
parity of medical research on women's and men's diseases

And the cherry on top is that many who will vociferously defend THIS as a "choice"

will in the same breath insist that THIS is exploitation:

no one forces anyone to go to these establishments.

If people have not yet figured out that old adage, "sex sells", they should turn off their TV's and computers as well.

No one is dragged into these establishments and forced to eat, or gawk. If people don't like these places, don't go in...w/or w/o kids.

Sheesh.

caveat: I have never been to a Hooters, nor have I been to an Applebee's, Olive Garden or any other establishment that has taken cuisine to the lowest levels possible that can barely sustain life.

it's up to the business as far as I'm concerned.

Most of the smoking bans are being pushed by Republican based groups btw, and are part of the overall "control" of individuals behaviors. I think there could easily be separate sections as there were previously. The whole thing argument pits one group against another, and it creates a "separate class". Demonizing smokers a cause celebre' and I find it as nauseating as demonizing any other group.

It makes it more probable that men will
view all of us as objects, and not as
full human beings.

The "other" as opposed to the "actual",
as they view themselves.

Women who allow themselves to be exploited
are part of the problem.

87. I'm not trying to obtuse here...
but, there are many other ways that women are exploited and exploit themselves as well; prostitution is a perfect example. So is modeling either fashion, makeup or any of a thousand other ways.

I'm no prude in any sense of the word, and if these women wish to be seen as "sex objects", they have the right to do so. As I said before, no one drags people into these places and to me at least, the logical thing to do if there is a "problem" with this, do not go to said establishment.

More "rules and regulations" will not alleviate the situation, never has, never will. If one is uncomfortable with the situation, simply avoid it.

The constant barrage of people trying desperately to control others is truly annoying.

children.

I have already added the caveat that I do not go to the "restaurants" I mentioned above, and by default, I would not take children there...the same way I would not take kids to Chuck E Cheese's either, unless it was to be a part of another kid's party.

FWIW...the "children" aspect of this is a red herring, some people do not think these places should exist, so they find any way they can to make a "deal" out of it. Point is, who is the "moral authority" to make decisions on where a parent can take a kid?

Every citizen has the right to turn their little girls into whores. It's the American Way to do whatever the fuck you want as long as you can make a buck. And if parents want their little girls to emblazon their chests with boasts of being a Future Hoochie Mama, hey, it's their child.

Now teach them how to COOK the wings, not just serve them. That would be a worthy investment in their future.

Hooter's is not a family oriented place, by any means. I'm willing to bet that in this recession the management is hunting for ways to keep the revenue coming in. Hooter's is a place where beer + testosterone + lightly clad waitresses + marginal food = big profits and, hopefully, big tips.

Sorry, but I can't go for the beach equation. At the seashore, kids have plenty of activities to distract them from Dad's sightseeing venture. Besides, Dad can wear sunglasses to make his viewing more discreet. So can Mom, for that matter.

113. As Restaurants Go, Hooters Is a POS
By having their waitresses dress like cheap trash, Hooters encourages a clientele that behaves like juvenile trash.

Recently I attended a social function at Hooters. Although we were all very obviously well above drinking age, waitresses were required to card everyone.

For tabs, our cards were held and anytime someone ordered a drink, the waitress had to ask out loud the name on the tab. For those paying cash, we had to pay for our drinks at the time we ordered them and often it took 10-15 minutes before it arrived.

We figured the only reason it made sense for them to treat us in this manner was that they must have had a lot of people run out on them in the past.

It was a frustrating evening and get this - it was a Monday, the place was half-dead.
