Post-ABC poll: Sarah Palin lags Obama in theoretical 2012 presidential election
Source: Washington Post

Sarah Palin has played a prominent role in defining Republican Party politics this year but still faces sizable obstacles if she decides to run for president in 2012, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Six in 10 voters say they would not even consider voting for the former Alaska governor if she launches a White House bid, and she loses badly to President Obama in a hypothetical 2012 general election test.

Despite her high profile, amplified this fall by her campaign appearances and endorsements and her new reality TV program, "Sarah Palin's Alaska," Palin has not made demonstrable progress in overcoming opposition to her possible candidacy. If anything, she has slipped over the past year.

A slim 8 percent of all registered voters say they would definitely vote for Palin for president, while 31 percent say they would consider doing so. Fully 60 percent say they definitely would not. Among all Americans, 59 percent say they would not vote for her, up from 53 percent in November 2009.

Don't listen to them, grifter quitter. Become their nominee in 2012, so that we can take back the House.

6. I hope Palin is not the nominee
I'd prefer she didn't run at all. I'd like to see Obama hash it out with somebody who actually knows a thing or two about governing so the campaign can be about issues and not personalities. Palin's a lightweight on actual policy, so a campaign with her in it would degenerate into a TMZ-style circus. Many in the media despise her, which would in the end help her efforts to further build up her 'populist' brand. It would be a pretty nasty campaign that would bring out the worst on all sides.

There's also a small chance that she could win too, though she would probably need help in the form of a major scandal on the other side. While that's not likely, I'd rather not risk it. Unfortunately if she runs I think she does have a shot at the nomination, though it's probably going to be a pretty hard-fought contest for the Republicans this time around.

BTW, THIS IS MY 1000th POST!

:woohoo:

13. I hope she is the nominee.
I want "respectable conservatism" to be utterly destroyed, and replaced with this more obviously fascist variant. Scary possibilities, but better in the long term. Hopefully I'm not being like one of the radical Germans who didn't mind Hitler's ascendancy, knowing that it would lead to the ruin of old Germany.

35. Palin is not Hitler
and the US is not Weimar Germany. I'm not saying our system will last forever, but unlike in Weimar, our system has deep support across the political spectrum. Lots of people might not like the President or Congress, but even the most anti-establishment characters here have less beef with the system and more with the behavior of those that run it.

46. You're absolutely right.
I would say the US is more like the Soviet Union in the 1970s - seemingly stable, with deep faultlines under the surface. I have no illusions that the US is about to fall, but I also have no illusions that it is invincible. Nor did I mean to equate Palin to Hitler. That said, I do think the sentiment of those on the left hoping for Palin to lead to GOP is rather like the KPD wanting Hitler to lead the capitalist faction in Germany.

47. There's a couple big differences though
The Soviet Union in the 1970s had some glaring political and economic problems that we don't have. They had restless minorities within a system that was primed for collapse -- observers compared it to a 'chocolate bar,' with perforations along ethnic lines, meaning it was ready-made for division. Also, their economy was an absolute disaster area. Ours isn't great right now, but it's nothing compared to the unbelievable waste and inefficiency that was built into the Soviet economy.

I don't think our system will collapse anytime soon. It won't last forever, but it will probably be around long after you and I are gone.

I doubt she knows nothing at all, as you can't be heavily involved in politics without at least absorbing something. Total lack of political knowledge of any kind is usually restricted to people who reject the entire process, mainly non-voters who never follow current events.

14. Obama has big lead on Palin, poll says
Source: USA Today

Sarah Palin doesn't like the way Barack Obama is conducting the presidency, but not many Americans see her as a potential replacement.

Obama beats Palin 54% to 39% in a theoretical presidential match-up, says a new ABC News/Washington Post poll.

Palin pointed out that it's early, and, besides, she is months away from deciding whether she will seek the presidency. Check out our OnPolitics blog for an account of Palin's "prayerful" consideration of a 2012 bid.

"A poll number like that, it's like, 'oh yeah, that doesn't look really pretty today," Palin told ABC News. "But a primary is months and months in the process, and there are thankfully many debates. And if I were to participate in that contested primary -- you know, it -- I would be in it to win it."

32. I must be missing something--aren't most of the other potential nominees also white?
In any case, last week someone posted a poll that said Romney was leading Obama. I responded that I assumed that he would still beat Palin. Thus, I must be brilliant.

Not really. Nor are any of the other pundits and pollsters who think they know what will happen in two years.

She knows the money is in standing to the side and hurling feces. That's why she quit in Alaska.

She also knows that she needs to hint at (or even run with no intention of winning) to enhance her brand to keep making the big bucks.

I don't think she's going to fare well with Romney, the Huckster, and whoever else working overtime to tear her apart. She has a base of support in the party that might see her through, but it's not going to be easy for her.
