Israeli police have found the body of a US woman who went missing near Jerusalem, and are investigating whether she was the target of a terror attack.

The body was discovered on Sunday after her British friend was found by passers-by on Saturday night, tied up and suffering multiple stab wounds.

"We discovered this morning, near Beit Shemesh, the body of a woman who disappeared on Saturday," Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

"The woman who was murdered was from America, she had an American passport. The second woman, who is in hospital, is from England."

The body of a American tourist has been found bound and stabbed near Jerusalem, Israeli police say, hours after another woman was found alive nearby.

The survivor was reported to be a 46-year-old tour guide who emigrated to Israel from the UK in the 1990s.

She had also been stabbed, and told police the pair were attacked by two Arab men while hiking in a forest.

She told police that they were attacked by two men while walking in the Mata forest, near the town of Beit Shemesh. As the attack unfolded, Ms Wilson pretended she was dead in an effort to escape more blows, she told police.

"We are examining whether this is a nationalistic stabbing, but other leads are being examined as well," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said, using Israel's term for an attack by Palestinian militants.

Kaye Wilson, a Briton who immigrated to Israel, said she and Christine Logan, a visitor from the United States, were attacked by two Arabic-speaking men while hiking on Saturday in a wooded area south of Jerusalem.

Wilson told police she played dead and managed to reach a parking area where people called the police, who mounted an overnight search for Logan. Her body was found early on Sunday.

Dec. 19 (Bloomberg) -- An American tourist was stabbed to death and her companion injured in an attack while they were hiking in the hills south of Jerusalem, Israeli police said.

The injured woman was found yesterday with multiple stab wounds, said Micky Rosenfeld, a police spokesman, and is in moderate-to-serious condition at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center. The body of the murdered woman was discovered this morning.

“Right now the main stream of the investigation is that this was a terrorist attack, but we are not ruling out possible criminal motives too,” Rosenfeld said.
