Schwarzenegger declares state of emergency as storms pound California
Source: LA Times

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in several California counties because of the powerful storms that have triggered mudslides, flooding and evacuations.

The state of emergency covers Kern, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo and Tulare counties. Officials in those counties have already declared local emergencies.

Under the declaration, state agencies are directed to provide equipment, rescuers and other resources needed to assist local agencies with emergency efforts.

In Southern California, a series of Pacific storms has hammered the region since Thursday, resulting in record rainfall and wreaking havoc on communities and roadways.

2. Staying warm and dry here near Sacramento
It also helps to make sure your home is above the 100 year flood plain here in the valley

you do realize the "State of Emergency" makes them eligible for funds

3. state of emergency
I think it also lets you file your taxes late with no penalty, under some circumstances.

4. Out here on the Sonoma Coast the sun is trying to break through.
We did get a lot of rain last night, but looks like a break in the weather now. I think the storms were South of the Bay Area for the most part.

7. SoCal...South Bay area...
...the sun actually came out for about 5 minutes this AM. Staying in and staying dry. So far, no loss of power and only about 10 minutes without Direct TV. Other area are much worse off than where I am.

:hi:

5. Interesting that he left out
Santa Barbara, Ventura, LA, and San Diego. Seems like those areas are as likely to get serious damage as the other counties in Southern California.

10. Fresno County is actually doing pretty well,
all things considered. But then again, we're prepared for a certain amount of watershed -- it's why the canal system was built -- to carry the runoff from the Sierras to the farmers. As a secondary system, we have ponding basins all over the city -- basically about 5 acres dug out to hold the excess. (In the summer, they have grass and are used for recreation purposes.) What's weird is that Visalia is like 35 miles south of us and they got like 3 more inches of rain than we did and they're really having a time of it.
