Coburn: Control Government Spending or Face 'Apocalyptic Pain' (Faux)
Source: Fox News

"Apocalyptic pain" from an out-of-control debt could cause 18 percent unemployment and a massive contraction in the economy that would destroy the middle class, a leading Republican deficit hawk said in an interview that aired Sunday.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., who recently issued a report on government waste, warned that the U.S. only has about three or four years to get its fiscal house in order or it could find itself facing austerity measures seen in Greece, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and earlier in Japan.

"The history of republics is they average 200 years of life. And they all fail in the history over fiscal matters. They rot from within before they collapse or are attacked," Coburn told "Fox News Sunday."

"The problem that faces our country today, the last 30 years we have lived off the future, and the bill is coming due," he added.

9. Shouldn't that headline read "Control Corporate Greed or face...etc"
We all wanted more but we didn't want that 'more' coming from other countries and economies simply so the top 2% could engorge themselves on profits at our economy's expense using our resources without paying taxes to rebuild our infrastructure economically and socially. Government is the only thing still capable of protecting us from massive corporate take over and destruction yet even it is slowly being bought off.

How many times now has Obama been threatened by wall street bankers and the fed as well as monopolistic corporations that they will shut down the entire economy...no loans...high interests...and no employment because an economic collapse will not affect the very wealthy...just the millions of the rest of us scrounging for food, water,shelter...and safety. If collapse comes as expected it will mean people like Karl Rove for example will have his throat cut by those closest to him. This is history.

Billionaires bitching about losing a million dollars/yr in taxes is just sick and demonstrates the impossibility of people being capable of regulating their own greed. These republicans are too stupid to see how a collapse they cause will bring about their own demise...Too dumb to see that their electoral wins were really just a threat to the dem party to get on the ball and actually do what the people elected them to do...not to be partisan but to be progressive.

3. There Is A Name For The "Rot" Colburn Describes
That name is corruption. And, yes, we are seeing all kinds of examples of that thanks to people like Colburn. Everybody knows the choices. Raise taxes on the top 2% or steep cuts in Social Security (plus sizable defense cuts). Colburn only wants the steep cuts. Nothing on the revenue side and no going after the corruption. He is, in other words, part of the problem that he himself describes.

.... richest 2% extended by blackmailing the President by threatening to hurt the unemployed
over Christmas.

I guess when you have no shame you can say anything you want and when you have
a network like Fox News willing to broadcast lies as the truth your world is what
you say it is and the facts be damned.

7. This is BS.
Chicken Little Coburn is slime. This country has a fort full of gold and a cavern full of oil. The rich wont be happy though unless they are secure and Coburn is the designated salve to keep the rich folks money tumbling into the GOPea toilet. We will see in 2012 just how free this country is when the people wake up and smell the coffee.

18. Get the rich to pay their fair share of taxes.
If Corporations and the Churches paid their share, we could balance the budget and all probably get a personal tax break as well.

25. I'd vote for a candidate with the guts to say exactly what you said!
And, of course, in 2012 it will be TOO SOON to tax the rich. States and cities will go broke, more teacher, police and fire and other layoffs, but the rich can't have their taxes increased a single dime.

Sickening!

13. K&R
Get rid of Homeland Security and cut the Pentagon budget by 4/5 (including the shutting down all those goddamned foreign bases).

- And that should take care of the problem quite nicely.

17. No one is serious about the deficit.
Including this clown. Not even Obama is serious about it.

The only way to be serious about it is to get as much tax revenue as reasonably possible and to cut defense spending. Also, government spending on projects a la the New Deal is something we know works, so....

Anyone ignoring these things is simply not really concerned about the deficit. We cannot lay off enough teachers and fire fighters to cover it, period.

Chris Hayes pointed this out on Olbermann (I believe) weeks ago.

Just cut Coburn's salary to zero, stop the wars, get rid of the Marine Corps and go back to Nixon's tax package.

21. Funny he doesn't mention that it's Republicans and their rich friends
who have primarily been responsible for "living off the future".

Odd too, that when Repugs are in power, the debt is NO PROBLEM. They run it up to and beyond the previous record, then leave it for the next Democratic admin to clean up. Then once a Democratic admin is in place, suddenly "ohhhh my - this debt is really a terrible problem!"

REALLY? Well if so, then WHY did Republicans CREATE it? And WHY wasn't it a problem while they were doing it? And WHY isn't it a problem when we add hundreds of billions of UNPAID FOR tax cuts for the RICH to it? Eh?

Pretentious hypocrisy (not to mention fearmongering propaganda) is the hallmark of Republicans.

24. Exactly..
... the country is already in apocalyptic condition and you can blame Republican policies for 90% of it.

But the average dumbass American still hasn't figured it out, or, wait, maybe they just don't want to vote for a "democrat" that is no different, on economic issues, than the average Republican.

22. Oh, really?
Coburn: "... could cause 18 percent unemployment...."

Open your fscking eyes. We already have 30.5% unemployment thanks to republinazi spending on wars of choice and unnecessary military bases and they have let our infrastructure crumble. It's now time to reign in military spending and tax breaks for the uber-wealthy, and time for a new WPA.
