FBI launches criminal probe into racist police abuse of Hispanics in Connecticut town

Civil rights and criminal investigations have been launched into a Connecticut town over allegations of racist police harassment that has led to an exodus of Hispanic residents.
Racial profiling allegations began two years ago in East Haven, a predominantly wealthy Italian-American seaside town around 70 miles northeast of New York.

Hispanics make up around seven per cent of the 28,000 population, but numbers have been steadily growing as Mexican and Ecuadorian immigrants began moving to the small town and setting up small businesses.

But allegations of traffic stops, false arrests and even custody beatings for Hispanic residents has led to a civil rights investigation by the Justice Department and a criminal probe by the FBI.
Restaurants and stores that cater to non-white customers have been going out of business and owners said police officers have made a practice of parking outside shops and stopping any Latinos going inside.

Who is an ordained something or other in the Charismatic Christian wing, and I were just discussing this topic. He lives in OK and says OK recently passed laws similar to AZ's, with regard to racial profiling. He indicated he had little or no problem with the gist of the OP. He even holds this belief knowing my children's mother is Filipino. My children state they get stopped often.

I try like hell to get them to move. One lives in FL, one in southern GA and the other in San Diego. Willful ignorance on their part but what can a dad do?

Nothing I like better than living in a multicultural soup. I had Mexican breakfast yesterday- leftovers from a big family Christmas feast. My German-Irish sister married a local Mexican guy with a big family that really does Christmas right.

For dinner, my Vietnamese lady friend took me out for pho to cure the lingering flu I've had. Her daughter's going out with an Afro-American woman.

And later on today, I'll have some noodles and fruit brought over by a Chinese friend.

My Northern Euro white son got together with some Hispanic dudes over in Oakland yesterday and put down some musical tracks. His girlfriend's from Sofia, Bulgaria.

To some, this probably all sounds like the collapse of civilization.

But . . . it don't get no better than this. Thank God I live in San Francisco.

East Haven, Conn., is a quiet suburb of New Haven with a "peaceful, small-town setting and thriving businesses." Unless you are Latino, in which case it's the place where you're targeted with "traffic stops, false arrests and even jailhouse beatings."

From the late 19th through the mid 20th century, a number of towns across the U.S. instituted official or unofficial policies preventing minorities—usually African-Americans—from buying or owning property within the city limits. They were called "Sundown Towns" thanks to warnings that blacks and other persecuted groups should avoid being caught in these places after sundown. Now, East Haven isn't officially a "Sundown Town." But it sounds like the East Haven Police Department sure is trying to make it one:

Malave, a probation officer who works in New Haven, says the racial abuse is so bad that he only crosses the town line into East Haven to go home. He and his wife are now preparing to sell their house and move, joining an exodus of Hispanics who say police have hassled them with traffic stops, false arrests and even jailhouse beatings.

And even being a cop won't help you. Santiago Malave, a former New Haven police officer and current probation officer, encountered the cops while engaging in a dispute with his wife. Hesays he was arrested for "disorderly conduct" as soon as he let slip he was born in Puerto Rico. "I tried to talk to the sergeant, but he said, 'You spics don't have rights here,'" he told the AP.
