Brazil's president says not interested in taking UN post

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva reaffirmed on Monday that he was not interested in taking office in a multilateral organization like the United Nations.

In his last meeting with reporters before leaving office on Saturday, Lula said that accepting such a position would open the way for political leaders to lead these agencies.

"On this issue, especially with regard to the UN, I think we must have some competent bureaucrats in charge of multilateral organizations, because if a Brazilian president agrees to be the UN secretary-general, what would stop a U.S. president from taking the position in the future?" he said.

Local newspaper reports indicated earlier this year that Lula would run for UN secretary-general after completing his term as president of Brazil.
