Palestinian leader to lay first stone of Brazil embassy
December 29, 2010

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas is to lay the symbolic first stone of an embassy in Brazil this week, following Brasilia's decision to recognize a Palestinian state, the Palestinian representative here told AFP.

Abbas will head the stone-laying ceremony on Friday, and on Saturday he will attend the inauguration ceremony for Brazil's new president, Dilma Rousseff, Palestinian diplomatic representative Ibrahim al-Zeben said.

Brazil angered Israel and the United States early this month when it declared it was recognizing a sovereign Palestinian state within the borders before the 1967 Six Day War.

Argentina, Uruguay and Bolivia have since followed suit.

The other Latin American countries that previously recognized an independent Palestine are Cuba, Nicaragua, Costa Rica Venezuela.

1. Not a fan of Abbas, but this is a positive step in the Palestinian Revolution
after decades (centuries!) of oppression, Latin America appears to be leading the way in (albeit baby steps) revolutionary aims in many diverse aspects.

2. I hope the Palestinians get a strong leader to unite them sooner rather than later...
Just popping in before this gets sent down to the dungeon to say good on the Latin American countries that have recognised Palestine as a state so far, and that hopefully others like the EU countries and Australia and NZ will follow suit soon and leave the rejectionists of Israel and the US on their own showing their true colours about any acceptance of an independent Palestinian state...

4. any thoughts on who, my friend?

The problem seems to be too much money coming in from too many sources--corruption is almost systemically ingrained in something sarcastically referred to as "aid".. On that note it seems funny how much Abbas and Dahlan are at each others' throats these days, but that's funny in the "dismal, sardonic" sense. I don't follow intra-Palestinian politics too closely enough anymore (too disillusioned with how blindingly quick Hamas became wholly corrupted after kicking the bum Dahlan and his pals out of Gaza after Fat'h's failed power grab), but I think the only guy who can measure up is Marwan Barghouti? If he ever gets out of solitary confinement, of course. But then, the former arch-terrorist Mandela also ran for president from jail, no? Aside from him, the only leader I see liberating Palestine anytime in the near future is Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, but I'm not terribly fond of "foreign" interventions on the whole..dismal is the name of the game I suppose. Which is why I say, kudos for baby steps like this from LatAm, an area very familiar with US/Israeli covert terrorism and overt intervention.

5. The only one I can think of it Barghouti...
Of course Israel is never going to release him because they're very aware that he can unite Palestinians like no one else can, at least no-one that I'm aware of...

I'd like to be more knowledgable about Latin America, as the little I do know doesn't paint a very pretty picture when it comes to the behaviour of the US and its client states...

3. The world is changing. Exciting things are happening in
South America as countries throw off the shackles of Global Capitalism. We need different voices as the old ones are stuck in the 'commie' past, still pushing the same criminal policies that failed people all over the world.

I think that power is shifting to a different way and I am glad to see this move by Brazil and other countries in S. America.

The bullies of the world seem to be losing ground, no matter how much of our money they spend on their brutal and deadly weapons of mass destruction. The human spirit is stronger than any weapon. Also happy to see some of those countries prosecuting their war criminals. That is the only way a country devastated by the brutality of its treasonous leaders, can ever really move forward.

Maybe one day this country will follow their example.
