ACLU seeking to ban Idaho prison practices
Source: Spokesman-Review

BOISE – The American Civil Liberties Union said Thursday that practices at an Idaho prison that include guards opening the wrong cell doors and allowing inmate-on-inmate attacks have caused violence at the facility and should be immediately banned.

The ACLU also said in a motion filed Thursday in U.S. District Court that victims of the assaults at the Idaho Correctional Center are routinely written up for defending themselves during the attacks, a consequence that can jeopardize their eligibility for parole and access to treatment and education programs.

Attorneys for the ACLU are seeking a preliminary injunction on behalf of inmates to immediately ban both practices at the prison run by the Corrections Corporation of America.

2. This is their idea of customer retention
after, prisoners who can't make parole or participate in programs that will help them outside of prison have to stay in--and make money for the CCA.

10. Our prison system is a disgrace.
And the many laws in place that make smoking marijuana illegal remain in place due to the need for DA's to have large staffs and big budgets, nd the Prison Authorities to keep making profits.

The guards like the overtime too - it's rather routine for a prison guard to make more than 100K a year with overtime.

3. Another great "security" industry addition to our economy since Reagan. What happened to
Rehab? There is a conflict of interest for the public
interest when prisons can be privately owned for profit and
judges can be bought. Close them asap. We are a criminally
produced country while these are operating.

8. I couldn't agree more
Then we have mandatory minimums for drug offenses voted into law by legislators who receive campaign donations by....the private prison industry. Vicious cycle.
The 'war on drugs' became a war on people, especially minorities and liberals. The US has 5% of the world's population, but we have 25% of the world's prison population.
Sickening.

4. Damn that ACLU;
They are Commies and hate the US. They will rue the day they were formed when the Tea Party takes over and makes them irrelevant.

Do I need the sarcasm icon?

7. Prisons: Another necessity that should never be 'privatized'
Profit should never be a consideration in prison policies.

How do we get rid of them, though? THAT'S the question now.

15. Michael Moore should do a documentary on American prisons
The subject screams out as something that needs to be done, and he's the guy who should do it.
