Christie defends blizzard vacation
Source: Associated Press

Gov. Christie, who was criticized for vacationing in Florida as a blizzard pummeled the East Coast, defended his trip and praised the state's response to the storm, which dumped nearly three feet of snow in some areas.

Speaking Friday at his first news conference since returning home, Christie said he made all major decisions on the state's response in consultation with Senate President Stephen Sweeney. Sweeney, a Democrat, was serving as acting governor after Christie, a Republican, left the state Sunday morning, hours before snow started to fall heavily.

"We did not have any significant loss of life," Christie said, calling it an "extraordinary accomplishment."

5. Really... what an amazing "choice of words..."
Which likely reflects more of his true feelings than anything he purposely says.

4. For those who did die, it was a pretty significant loss of life.
For those who know people who died, it was a pretty significant loss of life. Fuck you, Christie.

7. Well, what the hell?
"We did not have any significant loss of life," Christie said, calling it an "extraordinary accomplishment."

What?

What a jackass this fat, sweaty, angry guy is...EXACTLY how much "loss of life" would make it "significant"?

10. He keeps making it worse
He said on Friday that when his wife heard about the storm she said "Don't even think about cancelling the vacation." In response to the several mayors who complained that they had to use municipal funds to clear state roads he said that they were basically just bitching because they didn't do their jobs. WTF?
He's a bully and he's following the typical repug game plan of never apologizing (George Bush, anyone?) but this is not casting him in a good light. And He keeps making it worse the more he talks about it. Any significant loss of life? Did he really say that?

:wtf:

12. Focus on the stuff that matters....
Let's not stoop to the depths of our neocon/teabagger friends. Yeah...it's ironic. But it doesn't mean squat, and the more attention to these little non-matters we give it, the less matters of importance are recognized.

It's like that idiot in KY that kept focusing on Paul's "aqua-Buddha" crap. It didn't matter...but that's all he could parrot. It was disgusting, and instead of focusing on what the real differences between Paul and his views were, he turned me and thousands more off on his petty infatuation with "aqua-Buddha" garbage.

Christie is a horse's ass...and his size 54 belt line is going to be responsible for screwing over his state and the services to the most vulnerable in his state, just so he can claim nice tax preservation to his wealthy cronies. Let the facts that matter do the talking. Screw this story. It's a "non-story"!

16. Could not disagree more
This is about constituent service.
Ask Jane Byrne, Michael Bilandic, Adrian Fenty and John Lindsay (as well as Bloomberg) how that works. Or better yet, ask the people who voted them out of office what they think of them.
Or on the other end, ask people what they think of Corey Booker, Mayor of Newark

18. There are two things that I find important: his priorities, in the face of a probable state crisis;
& his belief in a smaller government. The statewide cuts he made recently certainly didn't serve his state well when the snow storm hit.

24. Some of the facts that matter.
Agree that the Disney/Mexico trips are a side issue. A "real" issue would be the reduction of state aid to municipalities and the effect that smaller budgets had on the response to the blizzard.

One article here: http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/12/nj_town_officials_struggle_cle.html

Christie's opponents can find plenty of ammunition to use against him on issues more substantive than his various travel foibles. His inept handling of NJ's Race to the Top application was one recent blunder. Kind of a win-win for folks that despise both RTTT and Governor Christie.

Another issue surfacing at this time is the connection of prominent Christie aides with Reform Jersey Now. While not likely to be a big deal, it does tend to undermine the reform-minded federal prosecutor narrative that has been part of Christie's political appeal. Story here: http://www.philly.com/inquirer/local/nj/20101231_Top_N_J__Democrats_say_group_tied_to_Christie_skirted_pay-to-play_law.html

In a rational world, Christie's killing of the ARC tunnel would be a huge liability, but he doesn't seem to be paying much of a political price for it so far.

17. Interesting That for Most GOP Asses...
"significant life" is between conception and birth. After birth it's totally okay to deny people health care and common human decency like a real job and living wage.

19. Absolutely. They value a fetus more than they'd care to help a child get the
basic necessities in life. They would rather see a child starve than to have any of their tax money used in feeding them.

And when they become young adults, the so-called "pro-lifers" have no reservations about how many lives are maimed & killed in the wars they love so much, as long as they themselves aren't involved in the risk.

23. Bloomberg
That's like Bloomberg saying New York's screwed up snow clearing didn't cause anyone to die, when the Times was full of stuff like a stroke victim not getting to the hospital for seven hours or somesuch by which time her brain was gone.
