Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will
present findings Tuesday of a 10-month
study of potential electronic causes of
unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles.
The NationalHighwayTrafficSafety
Administration commissioned the study last
spring in response to a request from
Congress. The agency enlisted engineers
from NASA with expertise in computer-
controlled electronics, electromagnetic
interference and software integrity. The
National Academy of Sciences is conducting
a separate study, the findings of which will
be disclosed later.
Toyota, which has recalled more than 8
million vehicles worldwide to repair or
replace accelerator pedals or remove
improperly positioned floor mats, insists
that only mechanical or equipment flaws
cause the problem. The automaker agreed
to pay a record $16.4 million fine for
failing to inform NHTSA in a timely manner
of consumer complaints regarding
unintended acceleration.
