Keith Olbermann to Host Major New Nightly Primetime News and Commentary Show on Current TV
Source: CurrentTV

Keith Olbermann, the acclaimed broadcaster and writer whose verbal pyrotechnics and moral passion have outraged, informed, and dazzled viewers of "Countdown With Keith Olbermann" for the past eight years, is bringing his slashing wit, analytical eye, and distinctive commentary to Current Media, the Emmy® and Peabody Award-winning TV and digital media company that was founded in 2005 by Al Gore and Joel Hyatt and is now distributed in more than 75 million households around the world. The news was announced today in New York.

In addition to executive producing and hosting a new nightly primetime news and commentary show, Keith Olbermann will also serve as the company's Chief News Officer and will have an equity stake in Current Media.

The new show will air weeknights in primetime beginning later in 2011.

1. A Message from Keith Olbermann

"Nothing is more vital to a free America than a free media, and nothing is more vital to my concept of a free media than news produced independently of corporate interference. In Current Media, Al Gore and Joel Hyatt have created the model truth-seeking entity. The opportunity to partner with Al, Joel and Mark Rosenthal makes this the most exciting venture in my career."

127. ••• An urgent message from Stella, the right winger from Texas. . . •••
Edited on Tue Feb-08-11 08:02 PM by breadandwine

Stella is a mysterious right winger from Texas. I've never met her. But sometimes she sends me stuff. Here's what she wrote this time:

That dang nabit blasted librul Olbermunt! Wouldntcha KNOW it! Once AGAIN he's gettin uppity. At first Comcast bought MSNBC ta put the libral winey-hineys in they PLACE. I was just laughin ma HEAD off watchin them put a Tom Brokaw ally over Olbermunt. Ha! That'll learn the little tyke. Cuz Brokaw's always been a friend o' the Bushes. All youz librul winey-hiney Dermacrits a-be callin Brokaw marble mouth. Well lemme TELL ya. He got mor CURMUDGEON power than all o' youz Dermacrits put together and you KNOW it!

Then Olbermunt up an left. Welp, ahz figered that he was through, washed up, sulkin off ta his cave where he BELONGS.

Just like Puff the Magic Dragon.

You KNOW Puff was a child-corruptin commie...........

But no. Wouldn't that be just like a LIBRUL ta pull a fast one an get a NEW show wut with that tree-huggin lyin smash-mouth Al Gore and his oil company-hatin pea brain.

Why jus the other the day the LIBRUL who cleans ma toilet asked me fer a raise! Ah told her I was BY her house just last month an ah smelled CHICKEN. Stick ta potaters or you'll get a pay CUT!

Now OLBERMUNT'S got a pay cut hisself but he's gettin an equity stake in the station. Are you kiddin? Al Gore got no RIGHT ta do that! That's SOCIALISM! Before you get a piece o' the action like that, you need ta EARN it the AMERICAN way! By havin a rich daddy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fact one: There ain't no such thing as glerbal warmin.

Fact two: If glerbal warmin was so bad 4yuz, how come the dyna-sowars enjoyed it so much, lullin around on all them lilly pads an all? Hm?

And fact three, buster: Dyna-sowars don't exist and they wuz created by Jeebus ANYWAY!

But that no good whiney hiney smash mouth flutter puss fuster brain motor-mouth librul Olbermunt. Evabuddy KNOW you readin the waffle iron, buddy. Howzee gonna get anywhere with some STINKIN innernet station or supm? We gonna ban the innernet, buster. Net neutrality down the drain.

Say yer ridin down the road in some STINKIN hybrid vee-HICKLE. Well o' COURSE it pooped out on yuz. Yer in the middle o' the desert and all they is ta eat is armadillo. Well yer too STUPID ta eat an armadillo. THAT'S cause ya shoulda driven a gas guzzler that got more VAROOM-VAROOM! Wouldn't that be just like a librul ta role out his solar panel to recharge his lectric vee-HICKLE in the middle o' the desert. All in order ta cover UP the fact that you libruls ain't got enough gas in yer engine and you KNOW it.

Hey. If the polar ice cap melts, all we gotta do is drill more oil, get more electricity and use it ta run some giant figerators at the North Pole. Ahm talkin BIG mommas.

Ya know wut yer problem is? Youz libruls are too STUPID ta fill up yer gas tank.

An ah just wanna crack UP when ah see Olbermunt gettin left in the DUST by BillO and Beck while he tries ta get some trackshun sayin Oh please, oh please! Ma innernet toy broke! BillO gonna stomp all OVER you an go cock-a-doodle-doo! Say goodbye ta yer ratings, buddy.

Ah HURD that Olbermunt just started supm called FOK News Channel. As in "Friends Of Keith." A LIKELY story. That FOK thing is a vulgar INSULT ta FOX. We KNOW wut you MEAN.

AND it's plagiarism!

Dang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drill baby drill...........

Everyone I know stopped watching MSNBC the night Keith announced his last show. We will all now watch Current TV (I've started checking it out yesterday)just to see him. Keith is the only real journalist on television.

Keith wants it, no suits interfering. This will put this station on the map and I suspect a huge hit. I am so happy for Keith and congratulate Current fir its vision. Huge...

65. I don't think it will...
...not because of the production values or content, but because people simply don't watch Current. MSNBC had the advantage of a relatively large news-seeking audience that probably skewed liberal in comparison with CNN. Current doesn't, and outside of dedicated political activists who might follow Kieth wherever he goes, I don't think a lot of people will gravitate there for one program.

Keith is now the Chief News Officer of Current Media and has an equity share in the network.
Besides his own show he has the opportunity to help bring in a whole new primetime line up!

96. I agree with both you & brooklynite. While MSNBC is more readily available to viewers
than CurrentTV, Keith's share in CTV, along with Keith's status of large viewership, he'll be able to bring in stellar programming.

I'm going to request that Cox acquire CurrentTV; if that doesn't get results, I'll talk to my husband about getting either DishTV or DirectTV which both include CurrentTV. One way or another, I want Keith back on my tv.

Might this new alliance with Keith Olbermann represent an opportunity for CurrentTV to return to Al Gore’s original vision of creating a true progressive 24/7 cable news channel that could counter Fox News as explained here?> http://www.economicrefugee.net/keith-olbermann-to-join-currenttv/

I have Dish Network and Current TV is on Channel 196. If your Cable company does not carry Current, then you can go to either satellite company.

39. Chief News Officer. That is the bit I wanted KO to have.
The fact that it is at Current, which is my favorite TV channel, a place that is still forming and growing and has done amazing things even in seedling stage, well, that is really great news. This is good for Keith, good for Current, and good for the media market in general.
Current has been doing great documentary journalism, the best on TV, for some time now. A great fit, and I'm very stoked about it. I've been promoting Current just to try to get it an audience, Keith will do that instantly.
For those worried about access, demand is what leads to availability in cable lineups. I know there is much drama here around such things, but do at least ask for the channels you want, and do so for Current if you do not have it.

46. I've never watched Current TV
So I was browsing through the scheduled shows and it is kind of an odd mix of programs. "Kill It, Cook It, Eat It - Learning how to pluck and butcher chickens to make bit-sized nuggets." That was preceded by "World's Biggest Gangs". I probably would have never run across this channel if it weren't for Keith getting involved. This should be very interesting.

49. Kill It, Cook It is about how food is produced, that which is then
eaten. Here is how it describes itself:
"Ever wonder where your food comes from? In each episode of "Kill It, Cook It, Eat It," a diverse group of participants is challenged to procure their main course the old-fashioned way: by hunting and killing their chosen prey, butchering it in the slaughterhouse, helping to prepare it in the kitchen, and ultimately sampling it at the dinner table. Some may enjoy the process while others recoil, but for each diner it's an intense journey that just may change their perspectives -- and appetites."

I'm posting a link for the page about Vanguard, the documentary series that is the best on the air today. There are many Vanguard segments you can watch right now, on the computer machine.

I also recommend Infomania for laughs.

150. He will need the Channel to have more news so that breaking
stories can be covered if need be.
The problem I see is if it is not available when needed it will be hard to get it going. IF there is some special thing happening or event, people will go to a station where they can watch it. If Current doesn't figure out a way to deal with that then it will be curious to see what they are thinking. Good talent should not be wasted.

47. Current is more plugged in to the net than any other TV station
Not only do they put their content out there, they have a strong tradition of viewer created content on the TV portion, a tradition which I hope is kept alive as they grow, because while it is highly unusual, it is part of the future, and they are the only ones who have really dipped a toe into that pool at all. It is as much about the internet as it is about TV, it has been so far designed to function as both, not one or the other. One feeds the other, etc. Even some of the ads have been viewer created.

I'm very happy that Current is going to snag Olbermann, as this now provides a liberal counterpoint to Fux Noise, which we have needed for quite some time. I always wondered why Al Gore did not initially make this channel a news channel that provided a liberal viewpoint that was free from right wing corporate meddling. We now see what that Corporate meddling did to Keith Olbermann. I can't wait to see his new show, which will be totally free from corporate interference.

style media, and not internet based, etc, I think it's a great move and I'm hoping that they invest serious capital into making it work! I mean a million+ on getting good staff to run an evening news program, a big chunk on marketing and the set, etc... Keith has a name and viewers, so they just need to execute this properly!

:bounce:

of course, CTV needs to be available to 90%+ of the nation, and it's not...

83. I think this is a mistake
Corporate interference or not, Current TV is just more of the same -- the old school media model. I think Olbermann would have been much better off doing something like the Huffington Post, bringing millions of more readers than he ever had viewers. People are falling away from traditional TV and Current isn't enough of a draw. I assume they're hoping this will change with Olbermann at the helm, but somehow I doubt it.

New media is where it's happening now. I thought Keith -- with all of his twitter activity -- was smart enough to realize this. Hopefully, it'll be incorporated in some way with the new show.

I said NEW MEDIA, remember? New media also includes video. I'd much rather be able to go to an Olbermann website, read his commentary or that of guest/staff writers, as well as WATCH him via video. Your assumption that a website only involves reading just shows that you're as out of touch with new media as he apparently is.

Edited on Tue Feb-08-11 10:53 PM by Tx4obama
HuffPo doesn't stream/or post ONE HOUR videos.
Keith needs a one hour show on TV - five days a week.
I think the move to Current TV is a great move.
Current TV will have the vids online, and also Hulu will have them. Hulu has Current TV vids there now.

By Keith taking over the news of a whole network he will be able to put in a whole new prime time line up.
We might just end up with a REAL liberal news channel.

When good shit happens HuffPo will post vid clips and articles. ;)

Edited to add:
I am NOT out of touch with new media.
Even Cenk Uygur who has a huge following online with his TYT online show has gone over to TV.
Keith is too big to only be online. He needs his nightly show on television.

109. Major is a gross exaggeration
I'm disappointed. This is a big step down. Current TV? Really?

113. Yeah, I think he'd get more exposure from a satelite radio program than Current TV.
but whatever.

112. That's great, I guess...
I was hoping that he would work to own a network, perhaps a talk radio network and bring Rachel, Ed and Larry along with him. But, I guess not...

115. You actually did get your wish
he's got an equity stake in Current TV - he's one of the owners and Al Gore is another. Not bad!!

God, it'd be sweet if he could actually grow the channel to become a major voice for progressive thought.

118. TV is better than radio.
You can't show vid clips on radio.
Without the visuals that Keith and Rachel use it would lessen their shows.

119. I totally called this
When Keith left MSNBC, one of his options I postulated on these forums, including starting his own online media blog, was Current Tv.

I'm happy for Keith and his audience which includes me.

how can it be "major" if it is on a network that nobody has ever heard of?

It's one of our cable channels at home. And now that Keith is there, I will be watching and I'm sure their ratings will get better.

124. Current
Interesting that those who have access to Current TV predict success for Keith and those who don't predict he will be relegated to obscurity. My prediction is that Keith has the know how and the connections and he will make Current TV the outlet of record for progressive thought. MSNBC is in trouble.

162. I hate to rain on the parade - I was ecstatic when I first heard this - but
have you checked out the programming on this network? "Kill It, Cook It, Eat It" with a segment about cooking pig brains with a flame thrower? Is it possible I'm on the wrong site? And the rest of the shows aren't much better.

170. Could be a partial result of the vision...
...having a meritocracy of sorts. Best programming rises to the top? Maybe KO is an effort to improve on what is currently rising to the top?

Gore wrote a lot about the meritocracy of ideas in a democracy...

175. Keith will be bringing a whole new prime time line up on the network.
Current TV network is the BEST place for Keith.
In Keith's agreement he signed it said he could not join any network that was a competitor of MSNBC.
Current TV is not a competitor, they have no actual news programs.
Keith is now part owner of Current TV and also the new Chief Officer of News.
The network will be revamped and much different by the end of May when Keith's new show airs ;)
