Among the objects missing are a gilded wood statue of King Tutankhamun being carried by a goddess

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- At least 17 artifacts from the Egyptian Museum of Cairo are missing following a break-in, the country's minister of antiquities said Sunday.

The missing objects include a gilded wood statue of King Tutankhamun being carried by a goddess; parts of a a gilded wood statue of Tutankhamun harpooning; a limestone statue of Akhenaten; a statue of Nefertiti making offerings; a sandstone head of an Amarna princess; a stone statuette of a scribe from Amarna; 11 wooden shabti statuettes of Yuya; and a heart scarab of Yuya.

The discovery that the ancient treasures are missing came after museum staff took an inventory, Zaki Hawass said in a statement.

The police and army plan to question people who are already in custody, Hawass said.

10. You're wrong.
Hawass has his major faults, but he would never steal from history.

9. Sloppy editing irritates me! That is not the correct picture...
This is the statue of Tut carried by a goddess

The picture they show is Akhenaten making an offering, which is obvious when you see the complete statue.

11. more/different info from UPI.. Protestors say police did it
CAIRO, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Allegations emerged Sunday that Egyptian police stole eight artifacts from the Egyptian Museum during the mass anti-government demonstrations last month.

Minister of Antiquities Zahi Hawass issued a statement Sunday saying an inventory review showed eight pieces were missing and at least 70 other items had been damaged, the Al-Masry Al-Youm news outlet reported.

There were also unsubstantiated reports from demonstrators that they witnessed police officers looting the museum after the unrest erupted Jan. 25. Police withdrew from the city's Tahrir Square after three days and were replaced by a largely passive military force.

15. Sadly this is not surprising
I thought that reports that nothing of value had been stolen had been premature and overly optomistic. From reports I've read the museum was a madhouse that night what with looters running all over the place, the few museum guards still in the place and the protestors who volunteered to help them running after the looters and the army sweeping in with assault rifles.

It could have been much, much worse.
