Assange hails WikiLeaks role in Middle East revolt
Source: AFP

SYDNEY — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Sunday said his site was "significantly influential" in the fall of Tunisian leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, an event he said "no doubt" sparked a Middle East revolt.

Assange, 39, said cables leaked on his whistleblowing site questioning US support for Ben Ali gave citizens the confidence to rise up and influenced the decisions of surrounding nations on whether to intervene.

"It does seem to be the case that material we published through a Lebanese newspaper, Al Akhbar, was significantly influential to what happened in Tunisia," Assange told the SBS programme Dateline.

"And then there?s no doubt that Tunisia was the example for Egypt and Yemen and Jordan, and all the protests that have happened there," he added.

The Glorious Wikileaks

Yesterday was bound to be another depressing day in Egyptian History: The election went as I expected, with massive fraud aimed towards an almost total NDP controlled Parliament, clashes, media blackouts and 9 dead, and no one in the international media or the US making a peep about it. The deal was sealed: Obama had sold out democracy promotion in exchange of regional stability, and having Egypt being its silent enforcer in the region against the Iranians. And then Wikileaks happened, and IT WAS GLORIOUS! <snip>

Wikileaks really was the match that set off the Tunisia revolt, and the international ripples led to Mubarak's overthrow.

15. Truth and transparency are the enemies
of the rich and powerful.

Julian has played a pivotal role in breaking through a cultural barrier. But no one should mistake an evolutionary process for anything that can be ascribed to an individual. I think he knows that. He should be honored.
