At the Courthouse: Forde eligible for death penalty

After deliberating just 45 minutes, the jurors in the Shawna Forde trial decided she is eligible for the death penalty.

This afternoon they'll hear from Gina Gonzalez and her surviving daughter, followed by the start of several days of mitigating evidence Forde's defense attorneys hope will convince them to spare her life.

but I'm really curious to hear what "mitigating evidence" would be introduced

the woman shot and killed these people in cold blood; she was looking for drugs and/or money-cant' remember the exact story

6. Being against the death penalty doesn't mean you're a sap

to me it simply means that the death penalty is just a legal way of murdering people. A civilized country shouldn't commit the same crime the criminal does and then feel righteous about it. The death penalty is like torture. It's barbaric but unfortunately many people like to do it.

means that all some shyster attorney has to do is get the sentence down to life in prison without possibility of parole, and he/she can be said to have "done their job". That's probably all we'll eventually see in this case, unfortunately.

7. I do not want her executed

I do not want to have her life in any way shortened. I want Ms Forde to live in prison for all the rest of her days getting older, creakier and knowing there is no escape. I want Shawna Forde never to see another sky unless there are bars and wires in the way. I want her to smell the blood and piss, hear the endless voices and coughs and farts of the inmates; to know the endless contempt of the guards. I want her to pray for death but never to be given to it, I want her to be saved if she tries suicide, revived if she has a heart attack and to feel her mind falling away with dementia.

But then I am a bleeding heart liberal against the death penalty.

I think it's worse to make these people live with the horror of their crimes. McVeigh laughed as he was being killed. He escaped a life sentence.

9. I don't live there, so my opinion doesn't matter

but that said, I'm against the death penalty. Vengeance is an inherently hollow "victory". And the cost to the state (and thus the people) is greater than simply locking her in a clean, modern prison for the rest of her life. Who knows -- maybe in ten or twenty years she'll do something of value for society. And even if she doesn't, it will still cost less.
