Toyota recalls 2.17 million vehicles in US
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) - Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 2.17 million vehicles in the United States to address accelerator pedals that could become entrapped in floor mats or jammed in carpeting.

More than half of the vehicles are being added to a massive 2009 recall that fixed gas pedals getting trapped in the floor mat.

Toyota has now recalled more than 14 million vehicles globally over safety problems since 2009.

Yet another reason to buy UAW made vehicles! I love seeing union-busters like Toyota fail.

1. Is Toyota "failing?" How much did our Government spend/invest to bail them out? (NT)

I actually found it refreshing that our government would intervene on behalf of one of our own companies to support/protect them. It's sad for our companies to be on deaths door before our government felt the need to do so. I know that flies in the face of "true capitalism", but ask yourself this: doesn't Toyota enjoy advantages on behalf of the Japanese government? Japan is a notoriously closed market for imported goods. The web is filled with stories of things like "Kodak film not being ok'd for use in Japanese cameras to protect their local company, Fuji film". Sure, you can always argue that 'we don't build what they want', but that hardly explains the success somebody like GM has in China. Clearly GM knows foreign markets and has the products that can sell there. The Japanese banking industry is intertwined with the government & currency manipulation has been employed for years, hyper-inflating Japanese-domestic companies profits on goods sold outside their borders. I could easily argue that Toyota doesn't need any of OUR governments help.. they've got a government that already has been helping them out.

IMO, the US would be a better place today with more protectionist policies.

4. Agreed. Unfortunately, the U.S. has a strange fascination with buying Toyota appliances, even though
there are better, more fun to drive options.

5. Not the floor mats

It's the software in the myriad computers that now "run" cars. Error conditions occur in car computers because of their harsh operating conditions that are intermittent and basically impossible to track down.

For example, one of the computer modules might sit at -10 degrees overnight. But after startup it could get heated to a much higher temperature within a few moments if it is near the engine. That causes connections to loosen, and impedance to change, just to mention the more obvious non-linear effects.

Mercedes, for another example, has at least FIVE SEPARATE LANs in every one of their cars now. Some of their models have NINE. Each LAN has several computers connected to it.

Complexity breeds problems. My next car will probably be a 1968 Chevy.

8. Huh
What part of the technology are you asking about? The fact there are dozens of separate microprocessors on cars now, or what a LAN is? (Local Area Network, you can find what they are at wikipedia)

15. A '68 Chevy? You'll be battling a sticky choke FOREVER!
Well, unless you take the five minutes required to clean it. :hi:

Ah, yes. The era when "rebooting" meant kicking the bumper out of frustration when you ran out of gas.

16. So which is it?
You say it's a software problem then list a lot of potetial hardware issues with temperature change. Why don't you send details of the problem to Toyota so they can fix it?

18. Nice!
The hardware issues cause intermittent faults in the software. I should've elaborated this more in my post.

Toyota wouldn't want to pay the costs of setting up a test fixture to run through all the various combinations and car conditions. Oh, and BTW, the time needed to test all those various combinations of conditions would likely exceed the projected age of the universe, so they might not want to do it for that reason as well.

could you allow your floor mat to get your car to speed up to 70-90mph killing all passengers inside? nah! didn't think so.
Toyota and the government is misleading.
