Vital Signs: Advocates for the disabled plan wheelchair protest outside Madison GOP headquarters

Organizers from a coalition of advocacy groups say dozens of disabled residents of Wisconsin and union members plan to rally outside the state Republican party offices downtown to protest the Walker bill's impact on state Medicaid programs at noon Thursday.

At least a dozen people will roll through the streets in wheelchairs to the protest at GOP headquarters at 148 E. Johnson St. Members of the disabled community started gathering at the Madison Concourse Hotel around 10 a.m. Thursday.

Plans are for the disabled to be joined by members of unions in an effort to present a unified front. There have been charges that a key strategy of the Republican party is to split opposition by getting advocates to fight over the spotight, and over the scraps the bill leaves them with.

"We're doing this because most of the attention has been on union issues, and we need to let people know that there are many people out there who could die or end up in institutions if they lose their Medicaid services," says Jason Glozier of Wisconsin Adapt, one of the organizers.
