Insurgents seize main highway between western Iraq towns
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 05:50 AM by leftchick
Only this little bit so far...

ABU GHARIB, Iraq (AFP) - Armed insurgents seized control of the highway linking the predominantly Sunni Muslim town of Abu Gharib with the besieged city of Fallujah further west of Baghdad, an AFP correspondent revealed.

<snip>
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Insurgents attacked a U.S. convoy carrying fuel west of Baghdad Friday, killing at least nine people, witnesses said.

A Reuters photographer on the scene said he saw bodies burning inside the vehicles, which were still on fire near Abu Ghraib. He said the convoy included U.S. military vehicles and fuel tankers.

=======================================================

Now where do you think this convoy was headed? And why do you think Bremer wants a 24-hour ceasefire? Huh?

5. That was my thought too
Without even knowing about this convoy incident, when I saw this "cease fire" story, it sounded like, 'we're just out of supplies or something and CAN'T continue the offensive'--i.e., this is not a voluntary cease fire. To me it's a sign that not only is our military failing to anticipate and control the situation, but that the insurgents are in effect out-flanking us to adegree, guerilla-style.

This is not looking good...

6. Yes indeed.
This is an ancient manuever. Cutting off the troop's supply-line.

Great ugliness ahead.

3. Seizing a highway? How can they do that without air cover?
Wouldn't it be relatively easy to attack them from the air?

8. if every convoy needs low-air cover...
it greatly reduces the flexibility of the supply route.

7. This is incredible
They may not hold the hwy for long, but I'll tell you what, they don't have to. Things like this mean that the military has to take resources away from somewhere else to re-take the hwy.

The insurgents are WINNING right now...

We only have 130,000 troops there. Iraq has 25 million people. If a mere 1% of the population become insurgents, we would be in a VERY precarious position. I think 1% is a very low estimate...

Is this a second convoy, or is the news just trickling out?
