BAGHDAD (AFP) - Angry members of the US-installed interim Iraqi Governing Council threatened to resign if American forces did not halt their bloody offensive in the restive Sunni Muslim town of Fallujah.

"If the Fallujah problem is not resolved peacefully in a way that preserves the dignity of its people, and if America does not fulfill its promises ... and if they insist on using excessive force, then I will submit my resignation," Ghazi Ajil al-Yawer, a Sunni Muslim council member, told AFP.

"How can a superpower like the United States put itself in a state of war with a small city like Fallujah. This is genocide," he said.

Adnan Pachachi, widely seen as the most pro-American member of the 25-member council, was likewise incensed by the violence in Fallujah.

"We consider the action carried out by US forces as illegal and totally unacceptable," Pachachi told the Dubai-based Arab satellite channel Al-Arabiya.

"We denounce the military operations carried out by the American forces because in effect, it is (inflicting) collective punishment on the residents of Fallujah," said the octogenarian former Iraqi foreign minister.

1. Yet it will go on
Who else thinks this will be the event that turns the overwhelming majority of Iraqis against us?

I worry for our troops, I worry for Iraq, I worry for us all.

4. Bremer will call for reinforcements from Chalabi
He needs fresh puppets for the (non)-"Governing Council". Perhaps Chalabi can dig up a few relatives.

5. This does have the virtue of showing how totally wrongheaded ...
Bushista-led actions are in Iraq.

But it will mean more when, if, the council members DO resign.

6. They are right. They must've found out about separating the women,...
,...and children from the men.

The US seems determined to prove itself the great demon or beast or whatever alQ calls us. The Bush Loyalists are tearing the world apart. I am ashamed to even call myself an American anymore.
