Gingrich fears 'atheist country ... dominated by radical Islamists'
Source: CNN.com

Hours after declaring Sunday that he expects to be running for president within a month, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said he's worried the United States could be “a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists,” in the foreseeable future, according to Politico.

Gingrich was addressing Cornerstone Church, a megachurch in San Antonio, Texas, led by the Rev. John Hagee, an influential leader among American evangelicals. Hagee's endorsement of then-presidential candidate John McCain in 2008 was plagued by controversy.

McCain ultimately rejected the endorsement over remarks Hagee had made about the Holocaust, in which he appeared to say that Adolf Hitler had been fulfilling God's will by hastening the desire of Jews to return to Israel, in accordance with biblical prophecy.

Erm, Newt? If we turn into a "radical Islamist" country, would you mind explaining how that would make us atheists?

And what has he lost anyway?

His mind, his credibility, his honor, his respectability, his trustworthiness, CERTAINLY his sex appeal (well, at least three women fell for it), his soul too, probably. And hopefully, most of his fan base.

That's one weasely fallback that these assholes exploit. "I'm forgiven!" "Jesus has already forgiven me!" dubya used that one a lot. Gives 'em cover. Think about it: you're already forgiven for whatever it is you may have already done OR what you may do in the future. You've ALREADY BEEN forgiven. Gee whiz, HOW CONVENIENT! The slate's magically wiped clean before you can even dirty it, and even if you try to dirty it again it's just in a state of perpetually, automatically wiped clean! YOWZA! I'd go rob banks too if I felt that way. HEY! Jesus says I'm forgiven! Free Pass! Let's ROLL! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!! It's nothing but an excuse to justify whatever shit they might feel like pulling from here on. They're already forgiven! They've got this Divine Ecclesiastical Automatic Pardon ALREADY because Jesus has already forgiven them for WHATEVER IT IS, fill-in-the-blank-here.

It's fucked. It's bullshit. It's damn near blasphemy toward our Savior, using and exploiting His Sacrifice.

14. Probably true. He's just trying use as many right wing "hot button" terms
in a single sentence as he possibly can. It makes for rather tortured "logic".

He would do better to use "socialist", "amnesty" and "ACLU" in a new "maximum hot-button" sentence. Rather than “a secular atheist country, potentially one dominated by radical Islamists,” how about: "a socialist atheistic country, potentially one dominated by "illegal immigrant" radical Islamists who have been granted "amnesty" by "Obama" and protected by the "ACLU".

3. He's lumping it all together on purpose
Edited on Tue Mar-29-11 02:35 AM by Solly Mack
The various components of the statement don't have to agree with each other and Newt knows that. The type of people who would support Newt aren't interested in why the statement is ludicrous because they won't see it as ludicrous. To them, it'll make sense.

It's an appeal to that certain kind of Christian (right wing fundamentalists) that thinks anything and everything not their brand of Christianity is evil. Newt is saying atheists will destroy that - not religion per se (since Islam is a religion) - but more pointedly - 'our kind of' - (his audience, with him relating to them as being one of them) religion.

Atheism = void = allows evil (Islam/"radical Islamists")

Now, he did add the radical as a means of denial that he meant Islam as a whole....but that denial is negated by the simple fact that you couldn't have a "radical" group of followers of Islam if Islam didn't exist. Because of this, we know Newt intends to call the whole of Islam the enemy to 'Christian America'....and that atheists are equally as bad as 'terrorists' (you know, those "radical Islamists")

It's the same old, same old. Rile up the haters with fear, prejudice and religion.

6. It's really quite simple.
You see, atheists don't believe in anything, therefore an atheistic society will be weak to Islamist take-over, as compared to a strongly devout Christian country that already has an firm ideology of its own and won't be swayed by the lure of a new religion. Atheism is only the first step towards an inevitable Islamic domination. We need Christian soldiers to HOLD THE LINE and save Western civilization from the evil forces of the East, by God!

See how that pretzel logic works? ;)

7. Athiests are annoying but Muslims believes in God and Jesus
(not sure if this will post. DU is down had to go thru a proxy)

and indeed newt's lost his mind. agnostics are easy to deal with . Atheists tend to be about as arrogant as some Right Wing Christians. Not all, I know a few but many sue

for no reason or intrude on meetings rather loudly. But the line - Gingrich fears 'atheist country ... dominated by radical Islamists'- makes no sense no matter which way I

look at it. Muslim's believe in God , and Jesus Christ Atheists don't. They believe there is no God. Agnostics at least don't know and probably the easiest to chat with.

Some Libertarians are too despite some who like to slam them. Get irritated myself because I'm supposedly a left wing libertarian. Some Atheists want to force their beliefs

on others like Christians did for years although not to the extent that Newt should worry about. Other than that. Newt probably hasn't been reading much of the bible so he

really should be fearing God more than fearing anything on the land. I would consider myself Wels, but there isn't one in Iowa. Missouri Synod tends to go outside of

Missouri. Not WELS :( ELS comes close but sometimes a bit too open.. Alot of the quiet Atheists that claim to be so. are somewhat borderline agnostics.

Jews don't have any problem with Muslim's. This seems to be mostly the domain of the Christian religion. Had a Shitte I think come along on a public school religion class

(on all religions) to a Synagogue. Rabbi had no problems with a Muslim being in there. (that and she was a female) Frankly had no problems with Christians either. Much

to Mel Gibson's Chagrin...... Wonder if Newt remembers Robert Powell who played Jesus of Jesus of Nazareth was a Jew. He was a Jewish actor. Would make sense to have a

Jewish actor play Jesus. Albeit today he'd have short hair perhaps. Maybe played my the cool guy in the Mummy movies. Oh Newt would have my head if he'd be playing Jesus

:P oh Allah indeed.

"The God Debates" by John Shook. I believe you might get a more realistic view of atheists if you read it. There are dogmatic atheists, but pretty few and far between. And even those who are adamant about their convictions generally don't tend to set out to convert everyone to their position. We non-theists aren't typically a proselytizing bunch.

114.  "Some Atheists want to force their beliefs." Not been my experience.
Far from it.

Believe me, I know about people forcing their beliefs. And they were not atheists. They were Christian fundamentalists. They can be relentless. I have yet to meet an atheist who made it his/her business to try to turn me into an atheist. Not so for Christian fundamentalists.

There are always exceptions but I would venture to say that if one did a poll, atheists would be near the bottom in terms of "forcing beliefs."

Of course many fundamentalist Christians think that atheists are forcing beliefs simply because atheists are willing to object strongly when Christians try to force THEIR beliefs, particularly on school children by insisting on teaching creationism or on young women by insisting that abortion is murder. But this is not the same as forcing one's own beliefs, is it?

I could say:

Agnostics are just atheists afraid to take a stand. (If there was some kind of proof...EVERYONE would believe! Duh!)

OK....

while the growth of the Muslim faith seems to be "picking up the slack".

the slack of what? The disbelievers? How can there be disbelievers in god growing and a belief in god, "Muslims", becoming more numerous?

Anyway... the "slack" in the disbelievers that the USA and its government can do anything for them is being taken up by crazy, irrational, hysterical Christians.

Atheists are of no concern. We have no power at all.

Its a toss-up as to which one makes me sicker. Guys like these sure make it easy to open my wallet to the Dems. Hagee thrives on EOW sermons. That is the motherload for him as hate is the motherload of trash like Limbaugh and Hannity.
Here are some of my favorite quotes from this evangelist and a few others friendly to the far right:

Top 10 Outrageous Quotes From McCain's Spiritual Advisers

Laughing Liberally To Keep From Crying
by Katie Halper
Before Jeremiah "Obama's Pastor" Wright spews even more nonsense, and quotes even more ambassadors, we want to shed some light on the brilliant gems uttered by some of McCain's own spiritual advisers, Pastor John Hagee and Reverend Rod Parsley. When Hagee endorsed McCain, because he is a man of principle, McCain said he was "very honored by Pastor John Hagee's endorsement." Reverend Parsley calls McCain a "strong, true, consistent conservative" and McCain calls Parsley "a spiritual adviser." Because the liberal media refuses to give any credit to McCain, it is up to us to be fair and balanced. So here are the top 10 Memorable Quotes said by McCain's religious advisers:

1. "Do you know the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher? The answer is lipstick. Do you know the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS? You can negotiate with a terrorist."
- Pastor John Hagee in his book What Every Man Wants in a Woman (Charisma House, 2005)

2. "The Quran teaches that . Yes, it teaches that very clearly."
-Pastor John Hagee

Living Liberally :: Top 10 Outrageous Quotes From McCain's Spiritual Advisers
3. "I believe that the Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans...I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they are -- were recipients of the judgment of God for that...There was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades.... The Bible teaches that when you violate the law of God, that God brings punishment sometimes before the day of judgment."
-Pastor John Hagee

4. "The military will have difficultly recruiting healthy and strong heterosexuals for combat purposes. Why? Fighting in combat with a man in your fox hole that has AIDS or is HIV positive is double jeopardy."
- Pastor John Hagee on Don't Ask Don't Tell

5. " will open the door to incest, to polygamy, and every conceivable marriage arrangement demented minds can possibly conceive. If God does not then punish America, He will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah."
- Pastor John Hagee

6. "It is impossible to call yourself a Christian and defend homosexuality. There is no justification or acceptance of homosexuality.... Homosexuality means the death of society because homosexuals can recruit, but they cannot reproduce."
- Pastor John Hagee

7. "Only a Spirit-filled woman can submit to her husband's lead. It is the natural desire of a woman to lead through feminine manipulation of the man...Fallen women will try to dominate the marriage. The man has the God-given role to be the loving leader of the home."
- Pastor John Hagee in his book What Every Man Wants in a Woman (Charisma House, 2005)

8. "I cannot tell you how important it is that we understand the true nature of Islam, that we see it for what it really is. In fact, I will tell you this: I do not believe our country can truly fulfill its divine purpose until we understand our historical conflict with Islam. I know that this statement sounds extreme, but I do not shrink from its implications. The fact is that America was founded, in part, with the intention of seeing this false religion destroyed, and I believe September 11, 2001, was a generational call to arms that we can no longer ignore."
- Rod Parsley in Silent No More (Charisma House, 2005)

9. "Gay sexuality inevitably involves brutal physical abusiveness and the unnatural imposition of alien substances into internal organs, orally and anally, that inevitably suppress the immune system and heighten susceptibility to disease."
- Rod Parsley

10. "Only 1 percent of the homosexual population in America will die of old age. The average life expectancy for a homosexual in the United States of America is 43 years of age. A lesbian can only expect to live to be 45 years of age. Homosexuals represent 2 percent of the population, yet today they're carrying 60 percent of the known cases of syphilis."
- Rod Parsley

51. To Neut, and those he was speaking to, an Atheist is anyone who doesn't believe in THEIR gawd.
And since their gawd is chosen from whatever specific part of the buybull happens to suit their needs at that particular moment (and if nothing is particularly close, cite unrelated sentences in rapid succession or just make crap up), it is not something that any other religion recognizes. Therefore anyone that doesn't believe their line of crap is an atheist.

Newtie, let me give you a free clue here - the word "atheist" means one who does not believe in the existence of any god, not just the Christian version thereof. It is not another word for followers of Islam. If this country were to be ruled by "radical Islamists" it would, pretty much by definition, not be atheistic.

Gingrich doesn't believe anything of the kind. He was only pandering to his far far right wing radical religious nut case base.

Newt is really worried about the nation turning into a secular atheist nation dominated by Muslims? Newt isn't that stupid.

How could a secular nation allow domination by any religion? Besides, the U.S.A. is so thoroughly dominated by Christianity now there isn't room for the voice of a second dominant religion. What Newt claims is utterly ridiculous.

He could have used every hot button buzzword in one sentence.

104. No wonder they repeat Gaddafi's propaganda
No doubt Al Qaeda slipping drugs into everyone's Nescafe and djinns and dead spirits fighting for Gaddafi makes perfect sense to them.

106. Why would atheists want a secular country?
Just being neutral on religion sounds like a copout for atheists. Maybe Newt was just playing the 'word game salad'. I am surprised he didn't throw in socialism or marxism. His followers probably only hear every other word or so.

Newt Gingrich on Libya policy: Firing in every direction
By Eugene Robinson, Monday, March 28, 7:47 PM

If you don’t like Newt Gingrich’s carefully considered and passionately argued position on the U.S. intervention in Libya, just wait. Recent history suggests that within days he’ll be saying the opposite of whatever he’s saying now.

Whole article here:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/newt-gingrich-on-libya-policy-firing-in-every-direction/2011/03/28/AF1F7mqB_story.html

Newt was for the "no fly zone" before he was against it before he was for it.

132. No, he's been like this his whole career...
Newt's Boogeyman Smoothie:

1) Pick an audience
2) gather their hot-button and crap-in-their-pants fear issues
3) toss in the word processor and hit "blend"
4) add aspersions and Kool-aid to taste.

Good for at least a dozen more paid speaking engagements, television commentaries, and/or book deals.

It's really very simple. Why is it so difficult for some people to understand?

An atheist country dominated by radical Islamists? How is it atheist again? Wouldn't it be dominated by atheists? I think he's lost it, that makes no sense.

Newt knows his audience is cognitively impaired, so it doesn't matter if one half of his sentence contradicts the other, any more than Beck lumping Muslims, Nazis, Communists, and Progressives together.

means it's ALL over for him..........what a clash of basic definitions THAT WOULD NOT EVEN BE POSSIBLE IN THE WORLD.

should be the end of him, but those who said Iraq would be 'simple.........I doubt 6 months..........oil would pay for it......" are STILL somehow on tv infotainment, which is why I don't bother watching them anymore.

153. more signs of the impending American entertainment flopocalypse.
back in the 70's newt & trump could have been teamed together on TV variety show, called, say: "The Rich Gong Show". bachmann & palin could have been starring in the remade for TV series, 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane'" -- dancing to the theme song: "sister, sister, oh! so fair, why so much crazy under your hair?"

instead, we have to tune out 'Jersey Shore' & 'Dancing with the Stars', depend on a nuclear wasteland of a Japan for halfway decent Anime for entertainment; while these 4 pinhead clowns & their miserable ilk, pollute the legislative landscape with their irredeemably dumass stupid, mad dog crazy, political dreamscapes.

shit! & fuck! is all i can say.
