Press Didn't Buy White House Spin on 9/11 Document

By Greg Mitchell
Published: April 11, 2004 5:25 PM EST

NEW YORK When the White House released the sure-to-be-controversial Aug. 6, 2001, President's Daily Brief (PDB) on the terrorist threat against the U.S., its timing could not have been accidental. Coming shortly after 6 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, on Saturday, it not only emerged too late for the network news programs, it also gave the nation's daily newspapers just hours to digest and interpret it. To help reporters in this task, the White House also released a guide longer than the 17-sentence PDB.

But if the White House hoped that all of this would make major newspapers spin the story their way, officials there must be sadly disappointed today. Nearly every major outlet chose to focus on the aspects of the brief that were not merely "historical," as the administraton had portrayed the document before its release.

Many newspapers ran Scott Ladlaw's Associated Press wrap-up which opened this way: "President Bush was told more than a month before the Sept. 11 attacks that al-Qaida had reached America's shores, had a support system in place for its operatives and that the FBI had detected suspicious activity that might involve a hijacking plot."

for our "free press" to start asking questions about the worst terrorist attack in America which KILLED 3000 PEOPLE? Lordy.

4. Ha! It is probably just because they were too lazy to turn the page
and read the WH spin on the second page.

24. Sadly, far too likely
> The press will find their backbone as soon as
> Kerry becomes President.

Almost humorous; if it weren't so sadly prescient.

3. And Colleen Rowley of the Minneapolis FBI could not get thru to top mgmt
Colleen Rowley had the information about the men training in flight schools in Florida and elsewhere. Why could she not get through if our intelligence agencies' management knew and were taking action about aircraft hijacking threats?

(I think I have the right story with Colleen Rowley)

7. ...the day before Easter...
When most everyone is involved with family and will not be reading newspapers or watching news shows.

That's why they rushed the release after Condi's blunder.

I hope this story has legs and it continues through the week.

17. If they had just rushed it out for release at 5:59.59 EST
The press might had spinned it to say that the WH released the PDB earlier than expected.

10. Don't be too sure. No matter where you go now, little bits of the truth
are sneaking through the cracks. Every lie they tell is being countered with their own reality. The war, unemployment, taxes, tax breaks for the rick, the continual erosion of pension plans because of corrupt CEOs, the bid lie on Medicare, the threats against Social Security.

You can't attack everything and everybody but the rich and expect it not to start seeping in. I realize that some people are just gonna be to damn stubbord or brain dead to accept the truth, but the majority are willing to listen, and in a lot of cases win. NOW, if they could just start seeing the body bags, the dead Iraqi babies and old people. That's what turned the tide in Viet Nam, that's what we need now. For a lot of these people seeing IS believing.

18. Unfortunately, this is true.
You know what I think is the biggest fact on this site today? That misery index. People vote their pocketbooks.

What I want to hear in respect to 911 is not that Bush is incompetent, which we all know he is, but that he KNEW that 911 was going to happen and he let it happen on purpose.

15. The media are whores. They go with the winner.
As long as the Chimp administration had the upper hand, the media played for the Chimp team.

Now the tide is starting to turn. Watch the media scramble to catch up with the new winner.

It's disgusting to watch, but at least we're starting to get some facts and truth out of the idiot media whores.

11. lindlaw, Chimp's jogging buddy, did try to put it in the best light.
I guess stopping well short of the unavoidable truth--that Rice and Chimp are liars--constitutes acceptable journalism for mediainfo.com. Not repeating White House talking points verbatim seems like a pretty low threshold for "not buying the White House spin."

12. Whats the latest on the missing pages?
I read last night that people were saying it was 11 and a half pages, and that all that was released was the first and last.

Has that been debunked? Ignored?

U.S. Investigators Knew About Planned Terror Attacks, Let the Suspects Get Away. More Clues That CIA and FBI Could Have Prevented the Attack on America

by Oliver Schröm
Die Zeit
October 1, 2002

<http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/timeline/2002/diezeit100102.html>

Excerpt:

"Crawford, Aug. 6, 2001. U.S. president George W. Bush is on vacation. He wants to spend the whole month at his ranch in Texas. Every morning, however, he still receives his Presidential Daily Brief, or PDB, wherein the CIA informs the president about the country's security situation. On this morning, the report is straight from the CIA director. His PDB runs 11 and one-half printed pages, instead of the usual two to three, and carries the title, 'Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.' Therein the CIA chief explains that al Qaeda has decided to carry out attacks within the United States, and that presumably members of the terrorist organization have been in the country for some time. It is unclear whether the CIA director informed the president about the statements of arrested al Qaeda members. According to their confessions, the terrorist organization for some time has been thinking about hijacking planes and using them as missiles."

WHERE ARE THE OTHER TEN PAGES???
