Boehner Outlines Demands on Debt Limit Fight
Source: The New York Times

WASHINGTON — Speaker John A. Boehner said Monday that Republicans would insist on trillions of dollars in federal spending cuts in exchange for their support of an increase in the federal debt limit sought by the Obama administration to prevent a government default later this year.

In his most specific statement to date on what Republicans will demand in the debt ceiling fight, Mr. Boehner told the Economic Club of New York that the level of spending reductions should exceed the amount of the increase in borrowing power.

“Without significant spending cuts and changes to the way we spend the American people’s money, there will be no debt limit increase,” Mr. Boehner told members of New York’s business and finance community. “And cuts should be greater than the accompanying increase in debt authority the president is given.” Mr. Boehner said those cuts should be in the trillions of dollars, not billions.

In the speech, delivered ahead of a second round of debt limit negotiations with the White House and Senate Democrats on Tuesday, Mr. Boehner did not provide a timeframe for when the spending reductions would have to be imposed.

1. I suggest we start by reducing congressional pay
reducing congressional pensions (perhaps eliminating them)
No more congressional junkets

They should start there if they really believe we spend so much money on worthless things

5. No more congressional junkets
Let each junket be voted on with a requirement that 60% of the Senate and House agree that the junket is warranted or necessary.

14. Catch 22. A majority could repeal any such law. However, it is said that passing a law is easier
than repealing one.

3. OK, let's start with a REPEAL of all tax breaks to those making over $500K/yr and I do mean
all of them - no deductions other than charitable ones. Period. Then enact a law stating corporations must pay a minimum tax of 15% on all profits, regardless of deductions. Then let's raise the cap on Soc Sec withholding to include every dime - no top stop. Then let's pay for the 2 wars these fuckers didn't mind were done "off the books" by taxing every company that has employees outside of the US. No tax breaks for those at all - in fact, it should cost the company 20% of the salaries they're being paid. Remove all subsidies to the oil/gas companies. They don't need to make billions in profits quarterly while we're subsidizing them.

Just a few things off the top of my mind. Rec'd

4. Fine. As long as it's all out of the DoD.
Amazing how they never made a peep about the deficit or the debt limit in 8 years of President Cheney.

7. Whiplash
Someone should explain the concept to these idiots.

Spending can't go from 100 to 10 with the stroke of a pen without the nation breaking its collective necks.

Simple concept these liars won't tell us.

11. me too. and he can move on to what he was born to do ....
be the TV spokesperson for retirement communities in Florida.

while Pelosi cheesed me off with her 'off-table' crap, she is at least a decent human being, with human IQ.

the only other thing this piece of dehydrated peel is qualified for, is to be poster boy for the FL Orange farmers.

10. Amazing! GOP Says Tax Cuts To The Rich Are Off The Table, But Medicare Cuts Are Honest?
What about having an honest discussion about how tax cuts to the rich are being made at the expense of medical care to the elderly and poor?
