Oil spill may have indirect role in dolphin deaths
More than 150 dolphins have washed up on shore

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- The massive BP oil spill might indirectly have contributed to the unusually high number of young dolphins dying in the Gulf of Mexico recently, a University of Central Florida marine researcher said Thursday.

The oil and dispersants used to clean up the spill may have disrupted the food chain and prevented dolphin mothers from building up insulating blubber they need to withstand cold.

That could contribute to calves dying, though there are other possible explanations, said Graham Worthy. He presented the findings to colleagues with the Florida Institute of Oceanography, a coalition of public universities from around the state. The institute received a $10 million grant last year to study the impact of the nation's largest oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico.

He said one of the theories on the deaths is there was an altered food web and in the fall, mothers should be building fat to get them through cold snaps.

2. The massive oil spill indirectly killed off massive amounts of dolphins?
Ok ok I can follow this. If I get shot in the head the bullet indirectly led to my death. What the f ever.

7. I know. I hate it when they think we will just swallow this shit.
In fact, it makes me think of "indirect" ways of cleaning their clocks.

6. I believe that the $10million grant came from BP... They bought up a lot of the Universities
to "study" the impact of the oil spill. There is a lot of hush/ hush money being thrown about... I went into the claims office the other day... BP is pushing hard for people to take a pay-out and sign off their right to a class action law suit. Apparently, they are really, really fearful of a hurricane coming through and bringing the oil back up to the surface and/ or picking the oil up in the winds/ rain and distributing the oil far and wide inland...

9. no fucking 'indirect' about it
..using a known toxic chemical (banned in their own home country) to hide other toxic chemicals (the oil) destroying ecosystems, livelihoods & lives in the process.

I doubt BP had any disaster plans in the works that went beyond their own accountability..with any existing studies about effects on the region wilfully ignored. (no money in it for them restoring fishing grounds, beaches, etc)
