New York PostHOUSTON -- Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, reunited in a Houston hospital room Thursday -- exchanging the wedding rings they had held close while he commanded the Endeavour space shuttle on its six-million-mile (9.6-million-kilometer) final journey.
The pair exchanged hugs and kisses just a day after he returned to Earth following a successful 16-day mission to the International Space Station (ISS), the Arizona Daily Star reported.
It was the first time Kelly had seen his wife since she underwent a three-and-a-half hour operation on May 18 at the Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston to attach a newly-fabricated piece of plastic skull.
Kelly had been updated on the progress of her surgery while aboard the Endeavour shuttle at the ISS. Giffords was wounded in a January shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz., that left six people dead.
