Perdue vetoes state budget (NC)

RALEIGH, N.C. — Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue vetoed the General Assembly's $19.7 billion, two-year budget Sunday afternoon. After a reiteration of her belief that investment in education has been the hallmark of North Carolina's success, Perdue said, "I will not put my name on a plan that so blatantly ignore the values that have built this great North Carolina."

Since the budget's passage on June 4, Perdue has said she was carefully reviewing the plan. She publicly criticized the budget several times this week, saying that its education spending makes her "sad for our state and our people."

"This budget is a living document," Perdue said Sunday. "It is a reflection of our values as North Carolina." For the governor, those values include investment in education.

Education spending and closing a $2.4 billion projected shortfall have been at the center of the budget debate. Perdue has pushed for an extension of sales taxes intended to be temporary as a means of retaining teachers' jobs. The Republican majority, many of whom ran on a platform of lowered taxes, emphasized the need to find savings rather that maintain that tax.

1. Must be nice to have a pro-education governor.
Wouldn't know here in my beloved Texas, where ignorance has been the watchword for the last decade...

14. Watch this if you'd like to see what we're up to. NC has worked hard over the years to claw our way
up and out to make improvements in education, we have a long way to go but destruction we're seeing now from this group of bandits will take us right back where we were.

2. meanwhile NC GOP leader Thom Tillis gives his staff 25% raises
and has the gall to insult her because she "delayed" on vetoing.

This is the guy who advocated "obfuscation" last week when he thought the mike wasn't on.

The same one who just told his GOP conference that NC teachers don't care about students.

These people are monsters. I honestly think they want minority children back picking beans in the fields and not bothering taxpayers with pesky things like their "need" for education.

4. It's my understanding it's the first time in NC's history that the Gov vetoes the budget
She speaks for me. I hope the NC Dem party has a strong plan to get rid of the Fab 5 'Dems' who are standing with the Republicans on this budget and will vote against her veto. It will be just as pleasing to replace them as it will to get rid of the Republicans who came up with the budget and the Voter ID Bill.

We have to rally around Governor Perdue.

RALEIGH -- Governor Bev Perdue has vetoed the state budget, becoming the first governor to do so in North Carolina history.

The Democrat rejected the nearly $20 billion budget plan Sunday, saying it moves North Carolina backward, particularly in public education. She also said the plan will hurt the environment and cut health care for the needy.

The bill can still become law. Republicans in the House and Senate say they have enough votes to override her veto. Five House Democrats joined GOP lawmakers when the budget bill got final approval last weekend.

North Carolina governors have vetoed 15 bills since receiving the power in 1997, but one has never rejected the budget plan.

Snail mail it if you can. For some reason, they all like paper.

10. Snail mail, e-mail and voice mail. And I've been passing out her contact info to a large
group for months now. And I told her to her face at the SEC meeting last month. She doesn't back down, I love her attitude and I'm determined to work my butt off to see changes in the GA in '12.

She is my kinda wo man!

11. I rec your comment. This kind of doing the right thing brings out the super supporter in me.
It's what I was looking for when I worked on her campaign and all of our D's on our ticket in '08.

6. isn't there a challenge to its constitutionality based on Leandro?
I wonder what would happen if it all falls to Judge Howard Manning again.

And I still don't know what happens if it's _not_ passed. I don't believe NC has a plan in place to keep things like the universities running when there's a government shutdown.

Anyone?

7. I know it sounds melodramatic but at this
point in time all we have is our children. It is imperative they be well educated no matter the cost. The cost of an education will be returned to us all. I have found myself in the last few years saying Oh, I just can't believe this. Oh, I just can't believe that happened. I don't say that anymore. Because I do now believe anything can happen. I may as well change my user name to Doomsday Woman.

17. Thank You for the list of Dems who may vote with the Repubs to override her veto
None of these traitorous Dems represent my district, but they will all be getting calls from me tomorrow - letting them know that we are watching - and letting them know that Democrats will not take kindly to their betrayal - especially after hearing the Republican plan about this whole budget mess caught on an open mic last week. Thanks again - will call all tomorrow!

"RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wake County legislator apologized Friday night to the governor for calling her incompetent in comments caught on an open microphone earlier in the day.

Rep. Paul "Skip" Stam was among members meeting in a closed strategy session who did not realize that the audio in the room was being picked up and piped throughout the Legislative Office Building.

Stam, the majority leader, said, "Either way, she's incompetent" of Gov. Bev Perdue, who signed an executive order Friday to restore the flow of unemployment benefits ending a partisan dispute over whether to tie those checks to the passage of the state budget."

16. Good on you, Bev!
Personally I'm glad she did this. I'm an employee of the NC Community College System and we're looking at horrible budgets for the next two years. The Republicans are trying to destroy everything they can since they won control of both houses of the legislature last fall (for the first time in over 100 years). Now the budget goes back to them and they can override it, but they will OWN this budget and have to face the voters next year. Hopefully they have awakened a sleeping giant, just as in Wisconsin!
