Obama bid to cut pediatrician training draws fire

The Obama administration’s bid to slash funding for training pediatricians at children’s hospitals is provoking intense protests from medical educators and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Earlier this year, the administration, as part of its 2012 budget, proposed terminating a program that provides more than $300 million a year to the 56 free-standing children’s hospitals around the country, which train 40 percent of the nation’s pediatricians and 43 percent of pediatric sub-specialists. In addition, it cut $48 million from the program this month as part of the overall spending reductions for the current year that were in the budget agreement reached with Congress.

But children’s hospitals officials say ending the 12-year program, called the Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education payment program, or CHGME, could cause a raft of problems.

That's the reality of the situation. Suggesting that "Obama" doesn't have a clue seems a bit nasty to me since his administration is looking for cost reductions. One program that I hope would be fully eliminated is the corporate give away in the Medicare prescription bill that refunds 28% of Retiree prescription drug costs to Employers. The refund is becomes taxable in 2013 but it never should have been included in the bill to begin with. That subsidy costs us billions a year.

That being this "proposal" could also very well be a trap for the Republicans especially since Obama knows most democrats in office would oppose it.
After all the republicans "have" been waging a campaign of supposedly wanting to cut things like education, medicare and other social programs so the trap could be that for those republicans that go on the record as supporting it any dem going against them can run a campaign of that the candidate wants to kill children and for those that oppose it the campaign could make it out for them to be a liar, either way it can potentially be used by the dems to weaken the republicans standing among their base.
