Obama to meet with key lawmakers on debt reduction
Source: The Washington Post

A day after debt-reduction talks led by Vice President Biden appeared to have broken down, the White House announced that President Obama would directly intervene in the negotiations, beginning one-on-one meetings with key lawmakers next week.

Obama will start by meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday.

Speaking Friday at Carnegie Mellon University before the announcement, Obama said that although the government must cut spending to reduce the deficit, it is also crucial to invest in new technologies that would create jobs and keep the United States economically competitive.

“I have a larger vision for America ... where we work together, Democrats and Republicans, to live within our means, to cut our deficit and debt, but also to invest in what our economy needs to grow,” Obama told a crowd of professors, businesspeople and local officials on the Pittsburgh campus.

1. Awwww shit...what's he going to give away now...????

Congress increased the debt limit without batting an eyelid 8 times in the last 11 years. There is ZERO reason we have to cut a single fucking government programme to do it for the ninth time...

If he gives away one single cent to those strong-arming thugs I will be done with him.

Mr. President it is time to CALL THEIR BLUFF.

5. Do the math, Mr. President. We're going to have to raise taxes.
Own it. Fight for it. Make any politician who's against it look like a greedy traitor who hates the American people. We can't get out of this hole without increasing revenue, and we're not going to get there by apologetic half-measures. Spit in their eye.

7. If your vision is that we "work" together, perhaps a jobs program to
put the 20 million or so unemployed, underemployed, and dis-heartened workers to work might be dropped on the table. Might even call it an investment - they like such words.

'Cause even the foggiest thinker out there knows damn good and well leaving it in the hands of business to create demand is a losing strategy for anyone in office, not just one side.

8. My guess is that this "vision" will include yet more tax incentives
to "encourage" businesses to create jobs. 'Cause that's been such a roaring success. :eyes:
