Africa ReviewAfrica Union Commission chairman Jean Ping has said the body will recognise Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC) if they guarantee the formation of an inclusive transitional government. The AU’s new position came after a mounting criticism against the pan-African organisation for failing to act on Libya and seeming to side with the crumbling regime of Muammar Gaddafi.
More than 20 AU member countries already recognised the Libyan rebels amid confusion and a sense of dilemma surrounding the continental bloc.
The AU chief acknowledged the unilateral recognition of the TNC by some member states even as the organisation weathered embarrassment and criticism. "They have a right and we encourage them to do so," Mr Ping told reporters at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.
He stressed the NTC should move to form an all-inclusive transition government. “If the NTC manage to form an inclusive transition
, the AU is ready to recognise ," the AU chief said. He explained that 'inclusive' did not necessarily mean Gaddafi had to be part of the transition.
