Authorities Ban Serbian Gay Pride March
Source: Care2

The Serbian Gay Pride March has been banned. Interior Minister Dačić said: “Police cannot support holding of all this gatherings for security reasons, because there will be clashes, victims, blood and we will end up a huge chaos.”

Numerous far-right, nationalist, fascist and Orthodox groups were planning counter-demonstrations and police have discovered that one right-wing group is using the codename “Belgrade in flames” for their operation against Gay Pride.

Pride Parade Organizing Committee member Goran Miletić told B92: “The Pride Parade Organizing Committee will not call off the parade and believes that Mayor Đilas’ statement is completely shocking, bearing in mind that he put an equal sign between all the events announced for the weekend. I have to remind you that the announced rallies are those of the organizations that organized violence last year and whose leaders were convicted of the violence.”

Jelko Kacin MEP, European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia’s accession and member of the LGBT Intergroup, and who is in Belgrade for the march, added: “The decision to ban Pride Parade is a sovereign decision of the Serbian Government and the National Security Council. I receive such a decision with deep regret; as a matter of fact, it deprives citizens of the constitutional and legal right to free expression and peaceful assembly. A state seeking to access the EU must guarantee the human rights of its citizens.”

1. This is a stark reminder that LGBT rights have a long way to go in many parts of the word.
Eastern Europe, most of Africa except for South Africa, and the Middle East except for Israel come to mind. And I'm not saying that everything is all sweetness and light in this country either, but at least we are making some progress.

4. it's pure ignorance. we know that. one thing that always ceases to amaze me is on the net
you will see on the open boards, or on youtube comments, these teens and men of various ages focusing on Gay people, much like that "stop gay parade" graffiti, that is on that person's mind so much??? WHY? I have perused various videos dealing with either Gay issues, or handsome males on youtube, and despite the title saying things like "hunks kissing", "shirtless college football star", you will see hundreds if not thousands of comments from (mostly) males going on and on about the video. I know there's no set reason, but obviously, a lot of it is trying to make themselves feel more macho by degrading other men, and some are in the closet and don't even know why they keep clicking on "Nick from Big Brother" videos, and such... I am so impressed when I meet a Straight man who doesn't even blink when Gay matters are brought up. It's sad I have to be impressed, but there's just still so much work to be done.

I wish those fighting for rights in Serbia all the best...

7. Nice to see anti-male sentiment is alive and well on DU.

Your ignorance aside(that it's mostly men who hate gay people - I know plenty of women who do as well) - this is a shame. People should be free to express their love for one another in all forms.

8. whatever! You do understand mostly can be as low as 51%? I won't call your post a show of
ignorance on your part, but I will call it over-reacting.

And, yes, there have been, and always will be more men that are more homophobic than women, and it is displayed every day at schools, at work, and in open settings. If you think it's somehow exactly 50/50, well good for you. But, what I believe and stated doesn't say that there aren't tens of millions of women in the world who are anti-Gay! Good grief...

11. Both men and women can be religious bigots.
(Please note: I am not knocking religious people who are not bigots.)

That said, how many women you know who are homophobic really means nothing when discussing U.S. society as a whole or the planet as a a whole. I'm sure you realize that.

10. Several of my coworkers are from that area of the world
And are some of the most homophobic people I have ever met. It's amazing because in almost every other aspect, they are some of the friendliest guys I've ever worked with. It really boggles my mind.
