Judge Orders Temporary Halt To Michigan Welfare Cutoffs

The state has to stop its plan to end cash assistance to 11,162 poor Michigan families, at least temporarily, under a ruling this afternoon from U.S. District Judge Paul Borman.

“The Court concludes that the Sept. 11, 2011 notices violated plaintiffs’ rights to federal procedural due process,” Borman wrote in his opinion, granting a class action lawsuit request for a temporary restraining order against the cuts.

>The state implemented a law passed in July which capped cash assistance at 48 months. The 11,162 families represents about 40,000 people, two-thirds of whom are children or teenagers.
