Prince Harry to begin Apache helicopter training in California
Source: Herald Sun

"The training in the USA will consist of environmental training, live firing and tactical exercises," a St James's Palace spokesperson said.

El Centro NAF operates target ranges for aerial combat maneuvering, air-to-ground gunnery, bombing, electronic warfare training and low-level flying.

The British military has been training at the base - 140km east of San Diego - for more than 20 years. The prince's two-month stint will also see him work out of Gila Bend Air Force Auxiliary Field, another 275km east in neighbouring Arizona.

His time off will be limited during the tour, but it is traditional for those on Exercise Crimson Eagle to take a half-way break in Las Vegas.

1. wow! He might meet Jenna and Barbara Bush serving our country. No wait..
One of the indications of a threat to the USA has always been the children or the spouses of the children of the President have served.

TR was crushed by his son's death in WWI

TR jr was there on D Day on the invasion of Europe.

members of the Royal Family don't even vote let alone stand for an elected seat. Would be constitutionally wrong for the them to do either despite elegibility of some of the lower family members.

15. The fact that he's not really Charles' kid makes it even luckier.
Take a look at Major James Hewitt, the man widely suspected to be Harry's real father.

4. Good on him. He didn't ask to be born into "the firm" as
his mother called it. It's to his credit that he's found his niche doing something other than ceremonial ribbon cutting. And, as an earlier poster pointed out, sons and daughters of the US elite rarely serve their country. Can't find any fault with this.

9. Prince Harry seems to take his service seriously
According to one of the BBC specials I watched prior to the royal wedding, he stated that he was pretty angry when his grandmother demanded he be taken out of the line of fire during his time in Afghanistan. He was insistent that he would "risk his ass" (direct quote) with the rest of his men, or he couldn't look them in the eye.

Whatever anyone here might think of the fact he's a member of the royal family, I was surprised at his comments. His mother would be proud.

11. At least Britain's royals put themselves on the line. Unlike our "royal family", the AWOL Bushes.

12. Not just them ...
You'd never see Chelsea Clinton on the front line nor any little Obamas
or many of the children of Congress/Senate members (maybe one or two
exceptions in the past) or of the UK politicians for that matter.

That's something I will support in the Royal Family: they take their
duties to the Armed Forces seriously (Prince Andrew is a fat overpaid
jerk now but he was on the front line in the Falklands war because that
was his duty.)

14. It is a big risk however...
Prince Harry is third to the throne after his brother Prince William and their father Prince Charles. Prince Andrew was second to the throne at the time of the Falklands war. Some royalists were not very happy with either of them in an active war zone. War is dangerous, but it's good to know that the Royals are ready to step up.
