(Reuters) - The Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, a major leader in the civil rights movement who was beaten, bombed and injured by fire hoses, died in Birmingham, Alabama on Wednesday at age 89.

Shuttlesworth passed away at the Princeton Baptist Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Dodd told Reuters.

Martin Luther King Jr. once described Shuttlesworth as "the most courageous civil rights fighter in the South."

In an interview at age 85, Shuttlesworth said he had expected to die by age 40 for his efforts to combat segregation in Birmingham.

2. BIG BIG R.I.P.
Rev. Sharpton had his widow on his XM show about an hour ago...

At least he got to live long enough to see an AA as President, although it would not surprise me that he would probably pull no punches on him!!!

R.I.P. for this bold warrior. O8)

3. Civil rights leader Shuttlesworth dies
Source: MSNBC

The Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth, who was bombed, beaten and repeatedly arrested in the fight for civil rights and hailed by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. for his courage and energy, has died. He was 89.

He survived a 1956 bombing, an assault during a 1957 demonstration, chest injuries when Birmingham authorities turned fire hoses on demonstrators in 1963, and countless arrests.

"I went to jail 30 or 40 times, not for fighting or stealing or drugs," Shuttlesworth told grade school students in 1997. "I went to jail for a good thing, trying to make a difference."
