170. He used to come into the bagel shop where I worked in Palo Alto when I was young.
He was smaller in stature than I had imagined, but really quite nice. He would joke that one should never to go into the IT industry.

Steve Jobs was an icon.

My heart also goes out to his friends and loved ones.

19. Steve Jobs: Ex-Apple CEO Dies
Source: ABC News

Steve Jobs, the mastermind behind Apple's iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac and iTunes, has died in California. Jobs was 56.

The homepage of Apple's website contained a full-page image of Jobs with the text, "Steve Jobs 1955-2011."

Jobs co-founded Apple Computer in 1976 and, with his childhood friend Steve Wozniak, marketed what was considered the world's first personal computer, the Apple II.

Industry watchers called him a master innovator -- perhaps on a par with Thomas Edison -- changing the worlds of computing, recorded music and communications.

May he rest in peace. One of the giants of the information age. He'll live on in every extensive history and technical compendium imaginable. What a legacy! (On edit - I thought legacy should get an exclamation point in his case!)

He did not look well at all, as of the last picture I saw, within the last couple of weeks or so. At least his suffering is over.

yes, he was. I always thought it weird, though, how many people don't get the Apple symbol- an apple with a bite taken out of it. The original sin- eating from the Tree of Knowledge. Knowledge, and the quest for it, is everything.

154. You may have just explained the radical wrong's aversion to education.
Especially the in-yer-face religiosos. I bet this is how they justify it. Knowledge bad. See? Adam and Eve would have been SO much better without it! The lust for knowledge is where they went wrong.

199. I have always wondered that...
why is gaining knowledge bad? Because with knowledge the powers-that-be lose some power. That might explain why, in our past, only priests and the wealthy were educated, and the kings gave power to the church because they controlled the people. With the way education is going in this country, I feel we are headed back there.

Also claimed an illegimate daughter was not his, and he claimed to be infertile. The court proved that daughter was in fact his own.

If I am not mistaken it appears Jobs also got away with backdating stock options.

A genius yes, as well as quite a flawed man.

138. The stock option thing was a lot about nothing
Jobs was cleared, Apple was cleared as a company, shareholder suit dismissed since they didn't lose value, IIRC one person got in trouble for faking some board minutes to try to clear things up.

Mostly it was about the effects of accounting changes that the whole industry was getting used to.

There was never any attempt to defraud.

Jobs was the force behind hundreds of billions of dollars of increased value at Apple, so pretty much any stock award would have been reasonable compensation.

198. Backdating in itself is not illegal
It's only illegal if it defrauds investors.

In this case, Apple had been backdating for a while as many other companies had. Tax code and SEC reg changes meant they had to re-do how the options are backdated.

And then Jobs turned down his options.

The $40 million reaccounting was for all the other employees who were granted backdated stock options.

In the tech industry stock options are very common even for rank-and-file employees, so we're not just talking about rich executives here.

And this is backdating as policy, such as "Any day of the month an applicant gets hired, the options will be backdated to the 1st" kind of thing. Keeps accounting of option award dates simple.

How do I know this? Aside from knowing the Apple case, I was offered a job with options near the end of the dotcom boom, "The pay isn't great, but look at these huge options we'll give you!" The intricacies were explained.

I'm glad I didn't accept since they tanked within a year. The options would have been worthless.

On the other hand, if I had hired at Apple in 1997 with options like that I'd be a mulit-millionaire.

188. Not many people of his wealth claim to be sterile to avoid taking responsiblity for offspring.
He also cancelled all philanthropy programs when he got control of apple again.

And then, there's that bit about lying about the value of the stock and also hiding his health situation from stockholders. And being hard to work with.

So far, I have not seen much selflessness.

Yes, he was lucky enough to be born a genius and he used that very well to become very rich. But I have not seen great personal qualities to balance out the egregious things he did.,

70. Bill Gates released a statement about the passing of Steve Jobs
I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.

Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.

The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

187. I think he used that phrase specifically to honor Steve.
When I read his comment yesterday that jumped out me. No doubt they were great competitors, but I have to believe there was a mutual appreciation as to what each had accomplished from their humble beginnings in the 70's. I'll bet Gates was deeply saddened by Steve's death.

Apple is the greatest computer company ever, and mostly because of Mr Jobs.
The first microcomputer I ever used was an Apple.
Mr Jobs was a hero to me who bucked the system, the way the business world worked back then.
His attitude of just working to get it done, to make it happen, inspired me along the way these past 30 years.

Apple computers were easier to use because they had a GUI.
They had a mouse.
I taught 100s of students how to use a personal computer in just 2 classes, before there ever was any such thing as Windows.

Wozniak and Jobs were the 2 most brilliant men of our time.

Thanks Steve for all the things that advanced how we do our daily living, RIP.

85. Some of his achievements...
As most people know, Steve Jobs was the largest individual stockholder in The Walt Disney Company, and purchased Pixar from George Lucas for $5 million, sunk huge amounts of money into it and waited patiently for his investment to pay off. With Pixar and Disney/Pixar, he was involved with the production of a string of successful feature films: Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up, Toy Story 3, and two that are still in production, Brave and Monsters University.

Additionally the short films Pixar has produced include Luxo Jr., Red's Dream, Tin Toy, Knick Knack, Geri's Game, For the Birds, Boundin', One Man Band, Lifted, Presto, Partly Cloudy and Day & Night. Pixar films have won 23 Academy Awards, including a Special Achievement award for Toy Story and Best Animated Feature Film awards for both The Incredibles and WALL-E.

As CEO of Apple, innovations that Mr. Jobs introduced to the personal computer and telecommunications industry include the Apple II, Macintosh computer, LaserWriter, HyperCard, Desktop Publishing, QuickTime, Plug-and-Play, System 7, iMac, SuperDrive, MacBook, the iLife suite (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, Garage Band), Mac OS X, iWork, Mac Mini, the enormously popular iPod, the enormously popular iPhone, AirPort, iPad, iTunes, iCloud, iOS, FinalCutPro, Aperture, Logic, xServe, Apple stores, the Apple Human Interface Guidelines, popularized wireless networking, and he basically reinvented the keynote speech and product launch in the tech world.

92. A blessing for Mr. Jobs -
God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be
So He put His arms around you and whispered “come to me.”
With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

He fought pancreatic cancer for 7 years, and must have had one helluva spirit.

In recent years, he seems to have known his time was short.

In recent months, he seems to have known the end was near.

One imagines he was able to bid farewell to friends and family in time for a lot of acceptance and peace.

One hopes he was able to imprint his spirit and vision upon most of the Apple leadership team.

120. President Obama's statement on the passing of Steve Jobs
Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.

By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.

The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve’s wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.

but you can't deny he was a visionary.

125. Farewell to a great man, who made this world better...
I got a chance to be within laughing distance of him when he gave SIGGRAPH Boston ('82) a sneak preview of LISA and that amazing operating system. "I had two goals for this" he told us, "I wanted an operating system that was easy enough for my mom to use, AND one that would make other computer makers say 'Oh sh*t!'"

I have only ever used Apple computers (I wish I had bought stock back when everybody was still dismissing them as never going to last!)

Steve suffered that same horrible disease that took my younger brother, pancreatic cancer.

I send condolences to his family and friends, from one of his millions of admirers.

...I think that's spot-on. Edison lit and warmed the world. Jobs filled its head with information.

Cross gently, Steve. Wow man, just... wow.

134. Tried MS DOS - CD:C/Research/The war on the Middle Class
Edited on Wed Oct-05-11 10:05 PM by NeeDeep
I got tired of typing Dos commands and still hate 'MSDOS' and the Mfucker that had me jumping thru hoops to simply change directories/folders and if I did not get the exact required 'diction' it would give an error message.

Some more:

"16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem error"

"MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program Error"

"Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS Program"

"16 Bit MS-DOS Subsystem" Error Message When You Install a Program"

"Wait while we are Troubleshooting MS-DOS-based programs, please insert thumb where needed"

Fuck you Bill Gates for doing this to us and becoming a Billionaire!

God rest the soul of Steve Jobs!

Really Man Thanks! Guess we are all gettin old.

Peace Bro.

I suspect he probably would have wanted to be here much longer, but for the time he was here, he made a huge impact on this planet, and led a full life.
Steve is gone but his legacy is reflected in the many technologies he enabled in the computing world.

RIP Steve.

not allowing any apps to be sold that apple disliked, kept GPS records of people on iPhones and worst of all, tried to choke Adobe Flash by not allowing it on iPhones and iPads in order to peddle his own software.

169. Generous and Gracious to a fault
I met him once when I was a vendor representative trying to fix a problem. He told me I was doing a great job, the only CEO ever to tell me that. At the time I didn't think I was because the fix wasn't working, but that simple statement inspired me to figuring out what was missing. By the time I left, it worked as expected.

193. Steve Jobs and computing
Jobs took computing out of the hands of geeks, nerds, and geek and nerd wannabees and put it in the hands of ordinary people who just want the freaking to work, and work well, out of the box. The geeks, nerds, and nerd wannabees will never forgive him for that, as evidence by a rash of nasty posts online. Their computer "expertise" in dicking around with crashed PCs was all that made them special.
