Radioactive leak at ex-power plant (in Scotland)
Source: Press Assosciation

Saturday October 8 2011

A radioactive leak has been found at the former Dounreay power station.

It is understood liquid effluent leaked inside a treatment facility, but was detected and quickly contained.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) said no material had been released into the environment and that the leak was "minor".

She said the next stage would be a clean-up operation and an investigation into how the leak had occurred.

1. More here
'Minor' radioactive leak at Dounreay nuclear plant.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) said the leak was minor and did not get outside the plant.

Sepa has launched an investigation. Dounreay is currently undergoing a £2.6bn decommissioning process.

Dounreay was constructed in the 1950s as an experimental nuclear power complex, but has not generated electricity since 1994.

4. As Ben Franklin was fond of saying, "Many a little makes a mickle". . .
though you'll never convince the garbage burners of this, since their very livelihoods depend on denial of simple basic facts.

5. For Dounreay, this -is- minor
You could dump the whole container full of that liquid on the beach and it would probably not show up as too much of a spike...

Taking a walk on the beaches west of Thurso after the winter storms you had a fairly good chance of finding fuel rod parts in the recent past.

I know this is somewhat rickety, but it does provide an overview:

Dounreay is one of the places where reality beats satire.
