Gov. Jerry Brown signs Dream Act for state's illegal immigrants
Source: Los Angeles Times

Declaring the need to expand educational opportunity, Gov. Jerry Brown announced Saturday that he has signed legislation making illegal immigrants eligible to receive state financial aid to attend California universities and community colleges.

Brown said he signed the California Dream Act because it makes sense to allow high-achieving students access to college financial aid.

“Going to college is a dream that promises intellectual excitement and creative thinking,'' Brown said in a statement. "The Dream Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and the lives of all of us.''

Under AB 131, illegal immigrants who are accepted into state universities can receive, starting in 2013, Cal-Grant assistance, which last year provided grants averaging $4,500 apiece to more than 370,000 low-income students.

Quite a wonderful difference how Democrats in California deal with this issue compared to republican-run states like Alabama and Georgia.

1. Dear federal government, PASS THE FEDERAL DREAM ACT!
Edited on Sat Oct-08-11 03:50 PM by alp227
The state acts are spineless and just enrage the right wing. The federal act will allow those students WHO WERE BROUGHT HERE AS CHILDREN, ya hear that "family values" voters?...to have an opportunity to become citizens after several year.

Oh, in 1980! Yep, SOCIALIST!!!!! (Via the ) And Ronald Reagan as president once used amnesty in describing the 1986 immigration bill that legalized around 2 million illegal immigrants! Yep, the same Reagan who as gov of CA trashed tuition-free public university.

The tough question would be: what about CA families of US citizens who are struggling yet can't get financial aid? how'd you answer that?

6. Congrats to California
A humane and respectable place. Unlike the poor, scapegoating states like Alabama, Arizona, and Georgia.

A kudos to Rick Perry too for speaking out for the undocumented children who attend university in Texas.

Bravo to real leaders!
