Boston police arrest 50 from Occupy Boston

By LAURA CRIMALDI
Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) -- Boston police have arrested more than 50 protesters from the Occupy Boston movement after they ignored warnings to move from a site near their official encampment.

Police spokesman Jamie Kenneally said the arrests began about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and were mostly for trespassing.

The protesters, part of the national Occupy Wall Street effort, had moved from Dewey Square to a second site across the street, along the Rose Kennedy Greenway. A local conservancy group recently planted $150,000 worth of shrubs along the greenway and officials said they were concerned about possible damage.

Boston police had warned protesters that they would have to return to Dewey Square and had issue leaflets saying they could not occupy the greenway.

2. That's Boston's story: protecting the $150k shrubs from damage.
No mention of arrests in other cities -- Seattle, for one.

4. Note: The plantings were at the expense of "a local conservancy group," not the city.

Another report I read said that about 100 had been arrested?

6. I was there until 1030 last night, I saw a single plant damaged...
Edited on Tue Oct-11-11 04:57 AM by rasputin1952
I am on my way down to Dewey Square...damage to plants will have been done by BPD charging into the area. This is on BPD, not the Occupiers.

Occupy Boston has been very cautious as to treatment of the Greenway, even taking donations to reseed/sod the areas Occupied.

Will report back after I get facts on last nights action.

9. OK, maybe I'm mistaken but
I could've sworn that BPD had ordered people to leave Dewey and go to Greenway-- not vice versa as this and other articles are saying. :tinfoilhat:

Last night I had gone to the BPD's twitter page @ about 9pm and saw the warnings. I guess I must have got it backwards, but I really thought that was what was said. Went to bed after that therefore missed everything that occurred after.

I'm new to Twitter. Is there a way to go back to last night's tweets from BPD for a second look? Anyone know? I'm going to try now, but I'm guessing not.

10. Found this from BPD (14 hours ago)
The mentioning of "returning to Greenway" is why I was confused about this... but it does say "original site" so I guess it's just me who doesn't 'get it'. Oh well.

11. 129 arrests in Boston "Occupy" protests
(CBS/AP)

BOSTON - Several protesters from the Occupy Boston movement were transported to Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday to face arraignment for ignoring warnings to move off a plot of land in downtown Boston near where they have been camped out for more than a week.

Boston police reported that they arrested 129 people starting at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, mostly for trespassing.

The Suffolk district attorney's office said 18 protesters were scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, with 35 more expected to be arraigned in the next two days.

Nadeem Mazen and several other demonstrators who had not been arrested were in court Tuesday to show their support. Police were unnecessarily heavy-handed, said Mazen, 28, of Cambridge, the cofounder of a design firm ...

13. The more people that you arrest....
the more that will continue to show up. There are not enough jails to hold everyone.
