U.S. aims to "unite the world" against Iran
Source: CBS/AP

WASHINGTON - The Obama administration plans to leverage charges that Iran plotted to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States into a new global campaign to isolate the Islamic republic.

"It's critically important that we unite the world in the isolation of and dealing with the Iranians," Vice President Joe Biden said on "The Early Show" Wednesday. "That's the surest way to be able to get results."

U.S. officials say the administration will lobby for the imposition of new international sanctions as well as for individual nations to expand their own penalties against Iran based on allegations that Iranian agents tried to recruit a purported member of a Mexican drug cartel to kill the Saudi envoy on American soil.

Biden also said that U.S. action against Iran could go beyond sanctions, but added that "we're not going there yet."

It's too bad that the people who made attempts at an uprising and were brutally put down will bear the cost of any military action, if it comes to that.

Those magical, woo-woo-ish, imaginary red and blue lines on a map are rather wonderful tools, helping us all to better rationalize to ourselves when collateral damage is acceptably and when it's not.

Edited on Thu Oct-13-11 07:17 AM by slackmaster
Two groups involved in attempted MUTUAL annihilation is just a fight, and unless my country has some skin in the game I say let them fight.

The conflict between religious factions that underlies the crime conspiracy being discussed in this thread has nothing to do with genocide. I suggest reading more carefully before you reply.

5. Well, that's one way to take the spotlight off the protests.
How many times can they lie to start a war? I guess as many times as they want.
"allegations"..........seems to be a familar word.......there were also "allegations"
that Iraq had wmd's.
Iran and Saudia Arabia are friends, so exactly why would they want to kill the
ambassador? And why would they want to do it on American soil? That makes
absolutely no sense. They are very aware that the US is always looking for an
excuse to bomb someone, and I'm pretty sure they realize what that outcome might be.
But, of course, if there was a WAR, then all the problems this country is facing at
the moment, would all have to be ignored while we go and kill people based on
someone's "allegations"................I'm not buying it this time either!!!

11. War is addictive - a cutesy poem
War war war! Let's march to the fife and drum!
If we blow our horns loud enough
The war chest will sooner come.
Let's send more kids to the killing field
And buy stock in the MIC,
Because the more weapons our nation wields
The more money will come to me me me!

On a more sober note, we can no longer assume that what we hear from our government, including VP Joe Biden, is actually true. Take a look at how we were tricked into invading Afghanistan and Iraq, as if we really had a choice in the matter. They were going to do it anyway. The war machine - the war industry - is always hungry, no matter how fat it becomes.

The Art of War, a venerable old Chinese guide, is actually anti-war, listing warfare as a last resort, when all else fails. The first resort is to maintain friendly relations with other countries. How about that!

How about turning our swords into plowshares, like the Bible says? For example, someone recently said that the way to win the "war on terror" is to stop fighting it. In other words, when we quit being the world's biggest bully, people from nations that we have stepped on will no longer be interested in retaliating. Just remember, the French Resistance was and is seen as heroic because they were on our side. To the Nazis, they were terrorists. To us, they were simply doing the right thing, defending their country. Of course, playing devil's advocate, violence is wrong, and two wrongs don't make a right. Still, when a thief breaks into your house and robs you and rapes your wife, you are going to defend yourself. That is different from terrorism, isn't it?

Sure, Afghanistan and Iraq haven't yet quite broken our country, although the devastation from the diverted funds is quite evident everywhere. So let's add another unwinnable war and make sure we as a nation go down in flames like the old USSR.

14. Bizarro World
Anyone who believes Iran is a bigger "terror threat" than the United States, can be made to believe just about anything. A simple examination of history shows conclusively that the U.S. government is responsible for a FAR, FAR greater number of civilian deaths. I mean it isn't even close.

How on earth does one conclude otherwise?

57. A global campaign to isolate Iran?
The US better be worried about isolating itself. "Uniting the world" against Iran will never happen. It's time for the US to update the general lines of its foreign policy. It seems like the last administrations haven't realized what everybody else in the world already has: US international credibility in anything related to the middle east or "terrorism" is ZERO. Iran is a very important player and crucial to counter-balance Western/Israel influence in the middle east. Apart from UK and some small countries willing to exchange their young soldiers lives for a few dollars, nobody will join your crusade, Obama.

62. Not long ago I would be worried about stuff like this.
But I don't let such ignorance and hate shown toward our fellow humans on this planet worry me anymore. Not since I came to understand that it's all about to come to an end.

- And not a moment too soon.....

What civilization is, is 6 billion people trying to make themselves happy by standing on each other's shoulders and kicking each other's teeth in. It's not a pleasant situation. And yet, you can stand back and look at this planet and see that we have the money, the power, the medical understanding, the scientific know-how, the love and the community to produce a kind of human paradise. But we are led by the least among us - the least intelligent, the least noble, the least visionary. We are led by the least among us and we do not fight back against the dehumanizing values that are handed down as control icons.

This is something, culture is not your friend. Culture is for other people's convenience and the convenience of various institutions, churches, companies, tax collection schemes, what have you. It is not your friend. It insults you. It disempowers you. It uses and abuses you. None of us are well treated by culture.

Yet we glorify the creative potential of the individual, the rights of the individual. We understand the felt-presence of experience is what is most important. But the culture is a perversion. It fetishizes objects, creates consumer mania, it preaches endless forms of false happiness, endless forms of false understanding in the form of squirrelly religions and silly cults. It invites people to diminish themselves and dehumanize themselves by behaving like machines - meme processors of memes passed down from Madison Avenue and Hollywood...
