In tough economy, Americans having fewer babies
Source: CNN

A decline in fertility rates that began in 2008 is closely linked to financial woes that started at the same time, said a new Pew Research Center report issued Wednesday. Changes in personal income, per capita GDP, unemployment rates and claims, and state-level foreclosure rates all had an effect.

In 2007, there were 69.7 babies per 1,000 women of childbearing age. Provisional data for 2010 showed that number had dropped to 64.7.

The actual number of births from 2008 to 2009 rose only in one state, North Dakota, which also posted one of the nation's lowest unemployment rates at 3.1%.

"This does not conclusively prove that the economic changes led to fertility changes," the Pew report said. "However, the timing is consistent with the time it might take people to act upon fertility decisions."

So that's why the Boehner-led Tea Party House and Republican state legislatures are pushing through those anti-abortion bills? And why Mississippi is trying to create fetal personhood in its state constitution?

3. That's the dilemma of their stance

Everyone has fewer babies and more abortions when the economy is bad.

Morals loosen when we go to war.

everything they hate happens when they put their polices into effect. So, instead of realizing or thinking about what will happen, they just double down with repression.

6. Good food for thought.
Private prisons, just in the nick of time.

I don't blame people for deciding against having more babies. Who can afford it and what kind of world is this to bring a child into?

5. That's the purpose of the quiverfull people
We have a lot of them about. I saw some at the warehouse store tonight. They're easy to spot: eight kids under the age of ten and all dressed like Little House on the Prairie. The parents looked exhausted.

9. Must be a lie. Sounds too much like common sense.
Since common sense was long ago tortured to death in America, I have trouble believing stories like this (that I haven't even read) because I saw a link on my Facebook page (that I also haven't read) that seemed to be screaming the exact opposite.....link search begins.....http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2049199/Men-stressed-economic-turmoil-likely-cheat.html

I suppose all the extra cheating doesn't necessarily have to result in babies, but given the restrictions to family planning by the God Squad GOPers and the various Christian Reconstructionist TeaTards, all that extra sex ought to lead to a population explosion.

As an aside, I don't suppose the US survey took into account any of the hardcore Catholic immigrant families allegedly overwhelming the country. They are inclined to build extremely large families by their religion and life station. And don't count out the Mormons ferchrissakes. If all their bubbly-faced missionary boys were called back to Utah at any one time, the Earth's mantle around Salt Lake City would be stressed so much it could well trigger cataclysmic seismic activity of monumental proportion.

Enjoy.

10. There's always a silver lining
The exploding population growth has to stop or we won't need climate change to kill us off. We'll all just starve to death with so many more billions of people on the planet.

12. I heard the opposite was going to happen. Y'know, for a couple, going to movies/bars/eateries/etc.
costs money.

But there's one fun activity that doesn't cost anything... (at least, initially)

Maybe people are being smart about protection?
