73. I didn't say anything about new laws.
In this case, perhaps local authorities should prioritize
more of their efforts towards finding law-breakers such
as this nut and perhaps less of their efforts on victimless
crimes.

But thanks for attempting to inject an NRA talking point!

78. It's not an NRA talking point
It's the Constitution's talking point. How do you stop a nut from buying a gun in the street? Black market crooks aren't gonna give him a background check. If he has the cash, he gets the gun.

79. Of course it's an NRA talking point.
If there weren't guns for sale illegally on the
streets, there'd be no guns for nuts to illegally
buy on the streets.

So lets arrest and imprison the gun traffickers.

And let's arrest and imprison gun owners who don't
keep their legal arsenals properly secured against
theft (as the law requires in many jurisdictions).

This idea that we all have to live with gun violence
so gun owners can possess their arsenals is purely
a convenient NRA (etc.) fiction.

27. A man decided he had to kill women to prove his status, his "ownership"?
My husband used to say "boy teenagers should be eliminated from little". OK, English wasn't his first language. What he meant was "kill them while they're young."

I's like to see a story like "Woman kills 6 in Barber Shop."

Then I'd know things were equal.

What is this about boys and men with guns needing to kill others, especially women?

60. First you tried to insinuate that it was a gang hit (scary black people, right?)
Then you brought up the boating incident, as if that were somehow a reason for his behavior
and then you said he probably had PTSD, which may be the case, but it's 5 years down the road
and the murder of his ex-wife and 7 innocent bystanders seems wholly unrelated to the boating
incident. So I didn't "hallucinate" anything, those were your actual comments.

...and it wasn't me.

Gangs in Southern California come in all colors, FYI.

Then you brought up the boating incident, as if that were somehow a reason for his behavior...

It may very well be a factor. You ought to read up on what PTSD is and how it affects people.

...but it's 5 years down the road...

PTSD can affect people for the rest of their lives. Read up on it.

14. "Possibly a custody fight"
From http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/salon-shooting/:

Some witnesses familiar with employees at the salon said the suspect was involved in a domestic dispute -- possibly a custody fight -- with one of the stylists. Police said they could not confirm any relationship between the shooter and the salon. They also did not release his name.

Sgt. Steve Bowles said Salon Meritage, in the 500 block of Pacific Coast Highway, appeared to be very busy at the time of the shooting, which occurred about 1:30 p.m.

40. An update on this,
Six women and two men died.

Police arrested 42-year-old Scott Dekraai about a half-mile from the scene. He did not struggle, police said.

The gunman appeared to have worn body armor and had several guns, police and witnesses said.
Police did not release a motive for the shooting. However, court records and acquaintances said he and his ex-wife, Michelle Fournier Dekraai, of Huntington Beach, who worked at the salon as a licensed cosmetologist, had been locked in a bitter custody battle over their son since he filed for divorce in 2007.

desire.

I just don't happen to agree that we need it, because it won't make a bit of difference to the next person to get so angry over divorce and custody issues. It won't make a bit of a difference.

By the way, he's in a death penalty state that has spent hundreds of millions of dollars keeping the death penalty in place and trying to execute dozens of people. So far, in all these years since the DP reinstatement, only 13 people have been executed.
It's really NOT making a difference.

True, sadly, but true.

71. Why should wearing body armor compound his punishment?
Simply execute him for the murders that he committed. The fact that he was wearing body armor is irrelevant.

54. Well, he may have been, he was injured in a boating mishap in 07..and
no, you are seeing the plate in that picture, it's NOT a California license plate, it's a decorative plate. Some cars in Calif only need a REAR plate with actual numbers and letters, the front plate mount can be used for decorative plates like that.

It's the FRAME of that plate that shows the Tea Party theme.

68. LA Times - Seal Beach shooting: Suspect suffered PTSD from boat injury
Edited on Thu Oct-13-11 05:10 PM by slackmaster
The suspect in the Seal Beach salon shooting rampage, Scott Evans Dekraai, 42, suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder as the result of a tugboat accident in 2007, according to court records.

His doctor, Ronald T. Silverstein of Long Beach, made the diagnosis in court documents dated Sept. 30, 2008, that were contained in Dekraai's divorce and custody proceedings....

Lots more at the Los Angeles Times Web site: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/10/seal-beach-shooting-suspect-suffered-ptsd-from-boat-injury.html

The comments are very interesting IMO - They show the same kind of confusion that we see in this threat about citing PTSD as a contributing factor in the crime vs. using it as an excuse (which nobody has done AFAIK.)

All anyone has to do is mention the fact that the man has been diagnosed with PTSD, and that person will be automatically accused of "defending" the shooter or using the diagnose to "excuse" the crime.
