Powerful quake rattles Indonesian resort island of Bali

BALI, Indonesia — A powerful earthquake struck off Indonesia’s popular resort island of Bali on Thursday, sending people fleeing from their homes and hotels in panic. No tsunami alert was issued, and there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The walls of some temples along the coast crumbled and witnesses told local radio and television stations they saw some houses with collapsed roofs.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.0-magnitude quake was centered 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of the island. It hit 36 miles (60 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.

“It knocked me off my motorcycle,” said one resident, Miftahul Chusna.

Indonesia's Metrology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BKMG) said the earthquake had a 6.8 magnitude and was 10 kilometers deep and 143 kilometers southwest of Nusa Dua.
