Wisconsin Republican Proposes Changing State's Electoral College Law
Source: Huff Post

A Wisconsin Republican lawmaker is proposing that the state switch its distribution of electoral votes to district-based awards.

State Rep. Dan LeMathieu (R-Sheboygan County) emailed legislators Wednesday morning asking for support for a bill he filed to switch the state from winner-take-all electoral votes to distribution based on presidential candidates winning congressional districts, with only two electoral votes going to the statewide winner. The move follows the introduction of a similar proposal in Pennsylvania.

2. Taking advantage of republican gerrymandering...
of course.

You have to admit, the r's are almost tireless in their pursuit of schemes that could give them an advantage.

3. Notice how the Rs never float these ideas in states like Texas or Georgia.
That should tell you everything you need to know about the motivations for these changes.

7. Notice how Democrats oppose doing away with it in Nebraska
There is a push to do away with it (the Republican party has said it will deny ANY funding of a candidate who opposes doing away with the split electoral votes) & Democrats oppose it. Personally, I think it should be one way or another for ALL states. That said, BOTH parties are hypocrites when it comes to this.

8. Indeed
This is an all or nothing deal.

Actually why bother. Let's just do a flat out popular vote. Screw the electoral college.

11. True enough...
...both parties do what they can to create advantages, gerrymandering being a singular example.

That is why it is always wise to remember that what is good for the goose is good for the gander and that your party may not always be running the show.

4. This did not go over too well in PA
Only speaker Pileggi & guv corbettwere on board with it.

All the gop fed reps were shittin their pants afraid of Wisconsin style protests. The idea got no traction at all, so far.

ALEC is most certainly a KOCH front group.

AFP state chairs need protests in front of their homes.

5. This is the idea that scares me.
I have no problem with getting rid of the electoral college, but that's the kind of thing where everybody should do it or nobody should do it. It's also the kind of thing that could eventually bite them in the backside.

10. Better yet, consider doing this on a national level
Or not at all. Positioning one state for partisan electoral pickup and not others is yet another thinly veiled attempt to skew election results. The GOP wants Nebraska to revert to a "winner take all" electoral status. It seems that pesky Omaha voters are a blue thorn in their side. But if there's "red" territory to claim in an otherwise blue state, "damn the torpedoes and get those districts in our column". A system of national electoral districts MIGHT be the next best thing aside from a direct popular vote, although it could still be subject to gerrymandering tactics.
