Caleb Nelson, a 26-year-old Navy SEAL idolized even by the other SEALs in his platoon, was laid to rest Thursday in Millard.
Nelson died Oct. 1 when a roadside bomb detonated underneath his armored vehicle, killing him instantly during a SEAL mission in Afghanistan's Zabul Province, which is near the Pakistan border.
The Rev. Larry Nelson, pastor at Millard Alliance Church — and Caleb's father — led a memorial service so big it had to be moved to the larger Christ Community Church in west Omaha.
Nearly 1,000 people filled the sanctuary. They listened and sobbed as Nelson's SEAL team members, his brother and finally his father eulogized him during a 90-minute ceremony.
