New Yorkers support anti-Wall Street protests: poll

NEW YORK | Mon Oct 17, 2011 2:19pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Anti-Wall Street protests have won broad support among New York City voters, who would overwhelmingly favor tougher regulations on the financial industry, new poll results showed on Monday.

Sixty-seven percent of those who responded to a Quinnipiac University survey said they agreed with the Occupy Wall Street protesters, who are upset that banks were allowed to earn huge profits after being bailed out during the recession, while average Americans remained under financial strain.

An even wider margin, 87 percent, agreed with the protesters' right to camp out in Lower Manhattan, as long as they obeyed the law. The movement began staging rallies more than a month ago.

Support for the protests was split down party lines, with 81 percent of the Democrats saying they backed them, while only 35 percent of Republicans said so.

2. 35% of republicans supporting is very telling.
As long as that percentage of republicans backs us or at least remains neutral, it will greatly increase our chances of eventually surrounding Wall St. into submission.

WTF is wrong with the 19% of Dems that are not behind us?

Could this be the ballpark % of Third Way Dinos in the Dem Party?

10. Nice thought but I seriously doubt it...
Most Republicans are also very Christian & in their eyes voting for a Democrat is just as bad to them as getting an abortion or marrying someone of the same sex...The few Conservative Republican friends I have have told me they could never vote Democrat even if they get robbed blind by the rich until Democrats quit supporting both abortion & same sex marriage. These are college educated people not 8th grade education level Tea Baggers. Christianity is what keeps many middle class folks voting against their economic well being...Republicans use Christianity as a fierce political weapon!! SAD!

4. That was only NYC guess
Because no more than 60 miles north of NYC, they are calling them "commies." Yes there are more progressive areas "upstate," (I live in one) there are an awful lot of CONservative areas as well. I would venture a guess and say that about 65% of ALL New Yorkers are supportive of #OWS. I know that there were many rallies this past weekend, that were well attended. There was even one in Peter King's distrct, out on Long Island.

12. Most N.Y. voters back Occupy Wall Street protests, poll finds

By 67 percent to 23 percent, respondents said they agreed with the group's views, and by an 87 percent to 10 percent margin, they said that the protests, which have drawn thousands to take part in the demonstrations and led to hundreds of arrests, are acceptable, according to the poll.

Politically, majorities of Democrats and independent voters agreed with the demonstrators, while a majority of Republicans disagreed, the poll found. Democrats backed the protests by 81 percent to 11 percent, while independents split 58 percent to 30 percent. Republicans opposed the protests by a 58 percent to 35 percent margin, but even those identifying themselves as Republicans agreed by 73 percent to 23 percent that the protesters had a right to remain in Zuccotti Park, the epicenter of the demonstrations.

By 61 percent to 28 percent, respondents also said they backed an extension of New York state's "millionaire's tax," a surtax on those earning at least $200,000 annually. The tax is set to expire at the end of the year.

The poll was based interviews from Oct. 12 to Oct. 16 with 1,068 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
