Demonstrations, poll fuel NY millionaire tax push

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The push for a higher tax on New Yorkers making more than $1 million a year is getting fresh life with a new poll showing overwhelming support, a high-profile rally on Monday and the strengthening Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City.

The Siena College poll found 72 percent of New York voters support the tax to avoid further budget cuts. Just 26 percent oppose the proposal by powerful Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.

Also Monday, the union-backed "99 New York" rally supported extending the current so-called "millionaire's tax" on New Yorkers with incomes over $200,000. It's due to expire Dec. 31.

Standing in the way of renewing the current surcharge on the wealthy and Silver's millionaire tax plan are Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his fiscal ally, the Republican majority of the Senate. Cuomo says taxing wealthier New Yorkers at higher levels would likely send the rich to Connecticut and New Jersey, taking their income tax revenue and jobs with them.

Certainly OWS 99% are having an impact -- not that anyone in power would want to

acknowledge it -- !!!

Yeah, right.

Don't worry. There are plenty of people willing and able to fill that breach.
Of course, New Jersey and Connecticut could make their plutocrats pay their taxes too instead of becoming an "on-shore tax haven" to the chagrin of 99% of their citizens.

8. That's the funny part...

CT has higher taxes and a millionaire's tax. They lose HQs of corporations, jobs and people to upstate-NY constantly because of tax-flight. Cuomo's been hitting the ganja if he thinks that people who left CT for NY to escape high taxes are going to flee NY for CT because NY raised its' still-lower-than-CT taxes.

NJ is not doing so hot on account of the fat man, they can't pay for things they'd rather not cut because Christie slashed taxes too much. Everybody loves lower taxes until the house filled with million-dollar shit burns down because the budget-cuts closed 4 out of 5 fire departments in the town and the nearest firetruck is 35 minutes away. Fucking moron. Yes, that's the place I'm going to flee NY for...a state that is failing to function.

5. So, right now they are benifitting from living in NYS without paying their fair share?
Let them take their money and go; it's not doing us any good now, is it? Bloomberg should be first in line!

6. This is just a prelude to the financial pain we are going to cause the 1%ers.
AFAIAC, they all need the death of a thousand cuts, with an added bonus of salt poured in the wounds.

7. Cuomo thinks a millionaire's tax is going to drive taxpayers to CT and NJ?

Yes...taxing rich people will cause them to move to a state with higher taxes or a state that is so underfunded that it's in danger of collapse and can't pay its' emergency personnel. Just more proof of why Andy's no Mario.
